There is one topic and one topic only dominating neighborhood blogs in Seattle this weekend, and that is...2 inches of snow! That's right, NYC and the Midwest, laugh all you want, but 2 inches of snow is big news and big excitement around these parts. So, we are pleased to present you snow-related updates from all your favorite local blogs.
  • West Seattle Blog blogged the living hell out of the snow, ice, and winter weather this weekend. WSB had not one, not two, but seven updates on the weather yesterday alone.
  • Capitol Hill Seattle was slightly less obsessive about their snow coverage, but nonetheless incredibly useful. CHS offers advice for how to get off the Hill this morning for work and news on emergency shelters opened to deal with the cold snap.
  • Central District News warned us all about the slick neighborhood slopes before the snow hit, complete with a handy map--and then they posted video proof of cars not heeding their advice.

While we usually have to wait until at least November (and sometimes all season) for snow, it looks like winter is getting an early start this year in the mountains. The National Weather Service is warning of a strong storm with a "vigorous cold front" hitting the Pacific Northwest tomorrow, and they're predicting snowfall in elevations above 4,000 feet. That means Stevens Pass (but not Snoqualmie) may see some accumulation as early as tomorrow, which is great news for eager skiers awaiting a season of snow and not-so-great news for drivers heading east.

"This winter, expect...absolutely anything," courtesy of the Seattle P-I. Thanks P-I...tell us something we don't already know! Oh, we understand, "El Nino is so last year..." and that this year is apparently "ENSO neutral," but is unpredictable weather in the Pacific Northwest really news? In general, Seattle winters and weather have always been unpredictable. Take this year for example, when it was snowing the last days of March and pushing 70 degrees yesterday, the first day of October. Basically what we're saying is they could post that headline everyday or it could be easily revised it to cover all Seattle weather, "As for weather in Seattle, expect...absolutely anything!"

Yesterday's stormy weather left over 35,000 homes in Western Washington without power. Nearly 20,000 of the homes affected were in Seattle and South King County. The National Weather Service warned of gusts of over 55 mph yesterday and, while it's no scientific measure, the windows of our house were rattling and the power flickered more than once last night. Thankfully, it never went out. The Washington State Ferry Service reported "steady winds at nearly 40 mph" off Alki Beach, which must have made for some unpleasantly rough weather on the Sound.
