Nothing fishy about this breaking news. Yesterday, the Pacific Fishery Management Council voted to ban Chinook salmon fishing off the California coast and most of Oregon for this year. The regulations ban commercial salmon fishing outright for the season, but do allow for limited sport fishing of Coho salmon. The regulations approved are the most severe in the history of Pacific Coast salmon fishing.

That sure didn't last long, did it? Barely nine months.

Wasn't that long ago, matey, we'd be lucky to see fresh salmon in Seattle. Bristol Bay had a huge sockeye fishery, the largest in the world, but the catch was frozen stiff before it made it to local markets. Now, we're spoiled silly, with fresh, wild salmon coming in from the mouths of rivers all along the Alaska coast: the Yukon, the Taku, the Stikine and, best of all, the Copper.

After 14 years as executive chef at Ray's Boathouse, Charles Ramseyer is leaving town. Bailing out. He's been recruited by celebrity restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow (TV's ) to open a new joint in Noo Yawk City called Wild Salmon. Opening day scheduled for April 6th. Charles says he's wants to bring the Pacific Northwest to Manhattan; meanwhile, he offers this advice to those he leaves behind:

In the wild, salmon are carnivores; unlike, say, vegetarian cattle, they eat smaller fish on the road to our dinner plate. So here's the conundrum: should Seattlest buy a fish that's literally eating up the ocean's resources? What's the alternative? Farm-raised fish fed on an inexhaustible supply of soy pellets, a burger from a feedlot steer, an industrial chicken?
