Can't Miss It: Thursday

ARBITRARY ART: Vital 5's newest Arbitrary Art Grant happening is going down tonight. The guerrilla event is taking over part of the parking lot on the 500 block of East Pine Street (near the intersection with Summit Avenue)--the outline of an art gallery's walls will be on the ground. The trick here is to get people to show up with a work of art tied around their neck; the people stand on the lines, forming the walls of the gallery and displaying the art. One gets the $500 grant. Just don't be late. 6-7 p.m. // 500 Block, East Pine Street // free to gawk, may pay to participate! more ›

Yesterday on Capitol Hill Vice

Did we say a gambling bust? We left out the coke and meth part. And the undercover cop posing as a "trust fund baby." It's all very Capone, a semi-shady poker room in the building behind the Wild Rose that neighbors looked the other way about--"It has not been a very hush-hush thing," a neighbor told the Seattle Times. "Everybody in the apartment building knew this was going on. It didn't bother them." more ›

KEXP in Capitol Hill All Day Friday

Since Capitol Hill denizens stepped up to the plate and donated the most during the 2008 summer membership drive, KEXP is spending Friday hanging out in the neighborhood. John Richards, Cheryl Waters, and Kevin Cole will all broadcast their shows from Caffe Vita--with live performances aplenty, including The Moondoggies, Say Hi, Mates of State, and Black Kids--while other djs will be taking over the sound systems at Linda's, Grey Gallery, the Cha Cha, Havana, Moe Bar, and the Wild Rose. Plus, there's extra discounts and perks for KEXP members at Capitol Hill establishments. Full details here. more ›

Gay Bars Threatened With Ricin Attacks

Gay Bars Threatened With Ricin Attacks

Yesterday, eleven gay bars on Capitol Hill (and one alt weekly, The Stranger) were sent anonymous letters containing threat of poisonous gas attacks. The bars listed as targets in the letters are the Elite, Neighbours, Wild Rose, the Cuff, Purr, the Eagle, R Place, Re-bar, CC's, Madison Pub, and the Crescent. The Times reports that Dan Savage thinks it might be "an embittered gay person" rather than a religious fanatic, as the letter contains no religious language or references. Either way, it's an unimaginative, hateful move on Anonymous' part, and we hope they either 'fess up or are caught promptly and brought to justice. Slog has word that there may be an organized pub crawl around the Hill on Friday night to show support for the bars; meanwhile, bartenders are asking patrons to be careful and not to leave their drinks unattended. more ›

On How We Sweat Our Face Off at Pride

On How We Sweat Our Face Off at Pride

Well, folks, Pride weekend has officially come and gone, and every last ounce of rainbow has been squeezed out of our veins. It was a hot weekend to be outside on hard, hot pavement drinking beer and scoping the scene, but we perservered so that we could have a tale to tell you people. more ›

Messquerade ’07

Seattle's infamous Bicycle Hobo(TM) tipped us off to this cool Halloween scavenger hunt thing going on this weekend that we hadn't heard of previously, evidently called the Mess-Man's Messquerade. Here's the run down from the site: more ›

Gay Bashing Is Cute When It's Done In Patois

Gay Bashing Is Cute When It's Done In Patois

This guy, Buju Banton, is going to stand up on the Neumo's stage on Wednesday and play a song called "Boom Bye Bye." "Boom Bye Bye," in the context of the song, is meant to convey the fact that Buju has just shot a fag in the head and is bidding him adieu. It seems like an odd booking choice for Neumo's, because the club is located in the heart of Capitol Hill - a mere block from the Wild Rose, which just a post or so ago was credited for helping make Seattle one of the most lesbian-friendly cities in the world - and this is the year 2006, although the song is from way back in the year 1992, when apparently shooting fags was an ok thing to talk about in a pop song. If you happen to be near Neumo's on Wednesday when people are going in or coming out, remember they're there to hear lyrics like the ones below, and maybe you should say to them, hey, shooting gays in the head is stupid. more ›

Alison Bechdel had a very Seattle weekend

Alison Bechdel had a very Seattle weekend

We couldn't make Alison Bechdel's evening readings Friday at the University Bookstore or Saturday at The Wild Rose, so we laid in wait at Lake Forrest's Third Place Books and nabbed her for a quick word as she did a drive-by signing. more ›

We Read the Weeklies: Old vs New Seattle

Welcome to another week of the pitched battle between Old Seattle and New Seattle, playing out in high resolution in the alternative weeklies. We have to give both of them this: their editorial control is pitch perfect. Outside of a tip of the hat to the other side here and there, each publication follows true to their Seattle View in article after article. more ›

Seattle Spit @ The Wild Rose

Seattle Spit is hosted at Seattle's one (1!) lesbian bar and it's billed as a "queer/trans" reading, but don't go see it because of that. Go see it because the people scheduled to read this month are amazing. more ›
