"Bacon Salt, Milkshake, Mustache at Luna Park Cafe" -- a Seattlest cell phone photo. In the hopes that wishful thinking will help extend the summer weather in Seattle, we want to share our recommendation for a quintessential Seattle way to cool off on those coming hot September days. On one of the few very hot days this summer, sweating simply sitting in our living room, Seattlest devised a plan with our best friend to ease......

AUSSIES IN THE HOUSE: The Waifs are so much fun live. There's just something about families that sing together—you can't get that kind of synchronicity from strangers. The Australian sisters and their male guitarist compatriot are one of the most delightful folk-pop bands around, and their live energy is undeniably infectious. Catch them tonight at that swanky joint, the Triple Door. 7 p.m. // The Triple Door // $33 THIS ONE TIME, AT BOOK CLUB:......

Seattlest is late to the party (as usual) on this supercool event—“Skiffle” has already been scooped by WSB and other blogs—but in case you haven’t heard: Bison, a (presumably) rocking group formed by members of Pearl Jam (Mike McCready), PUSA (Dave Dederer), Velvet Revolver (Duff McKagan), the Dusty 45’s, and “artists and students from Arts Corps, Rock School and the Service Board” are playing a benefit show at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center. (Whew) Tonight.......

Block Party Crown Hill by Seattlest Flickr Photog Jeff Carlson Lights & Sirens reports the real way to get folks to turn in felons is to offer them free gasoline. Last month, the Tacoma Crime Stoppers began a gas card giveaway to reward tipsters who provided information about the county's most wanted felons. In less than a month, 14 of Tacoma's 50 most wanted felons have been arrested.According to The Belltowner, there is hope yet......

Seattlest told you about the Sub Pop Big Deal and a bunch of other live music happening this weekend, but we neglected to mention the acts appearing at West Seattle's Summer Fest. Shame on us, too, because the best (in this Seattlest's opinion) already came and went Friday night. Recently reunited Coffin Break, a heavy grunge-era holdover, anchored the South Stage early in the evening. For not having played live but a few times since......

ENJOY THE HEAT: Coleman Pool, a public pool in West Seattle is an inexpensive way to enjoy the warm weather (finally!). Downtown Seattle turned into an Old West style stand-off this morning as SPD officers pursued bank robbery suspects driving a gold SUV. Shortly before 11 a.m., SPD officers surrounded the suspect's car on Spring Street between First and Second Avenues. While all the details remain sketchy, at shortly after 10 a.m., a man described as armed and wearing a mask held-up a West Seattle Wells Fargo on the 2300 block of California Street. SPD officers......

BEST LOCAL SHOW EVER: Okay, maybe that's too strong a statement. There are people who would argue otherwise, but Seattlest is pretty thrilled with all the bands on the bill tonight at the Tractor. It's a big ol' acousti-pop night in Ballard with Grand Hallway, Kate Tucker, Odessa Chen, and Husbands Love Your Wives. Yeah, we know. Hot action. Maybe it's not as killer as a Pearl Jam-Dave Matthews-Death Cab-Heart show would be, but it's......

Last week, we described a soup-er stay at Alderbrook Resort & Spa. This week, we met Soup-erman—a chef who really loves to make soup. As we’ve turned the corner into summer and the weather is warming (at least a bit), what is it about soup that’s captured our attention? Too many diners overlook salad and especially soup in order to focus on entrees and desserts. But soup is, like they say, good food. It’s comforting,......

"Random cow on top of mini-mart" by libben Talk all you want about walkable urbanism, multi-modal transit options, and LEED-certified "green" architecture, but low-brow places like this are what truly give American cities character. Anyone can look at a pile of Victorian bricks and nod in agreement, "oh, yes, why that is a truly splendid landmark." However, the majority of the personal recollections that make up our collective cultural narrative happen here— —the Corner Deli?!?......

Everyone knows Seattlest loves Pearl Jam. Which means we love Eddie Vedder. Which means we would have loved to see him play a tiny little venue in West Seattle on Monday night. And last night. Since this Seattlest lives in the neighborhood and all, we could have freaking walked to Kenyon Hall. But no. We weren't in the know. And, ignorantly, we decided to stay home Monday night. And last night, we decided to......

"Modern Pirate Ship" by Rasmus Rasmussen We don't get out to Fortress West Seattle as much as we'd like to or as much as it deserves. It might have something to do with its limited land routes into the place. But perhaps subconsciously we knew that it is protected by fierce pirates--which could explain our secret affinity. This land yacht--with sunroof and a Landau top, such luxury!--reminds us of the very first family car that......

Thieves suspected of stealing hundreds of gallons of premium fuel from stations in West Seattle and Sea-Tac have struck again. The latest incident in a rash of high volume gas thefts occurred last Thursday, when 208 gallons were stolen from a Gig Harbor Shell station. Police believe the same men were caught on tape last month, pilfering fuel from four Shell gas stations in King County. The Gig Harbor theft took place in the......

If you have not made it into Beveridge Place Pub in West Seattle for their Barleywine Bacchanal yet, it's not too late. Tonight, they will be tapping three different vintages of the Lagunitas Olde Gnarly Wine ('04, '06 & '07), which enables you to see exactly how this beer changes over time. At 9.7% alcohol, it shines after a few years. The contrast between the '04 and '07 should be very interesting. Stay away......

Theatre: We often short West Seattle because...well, we forget why, just like we forget they're over there, doing whatever they do in West Seattle. At the moment, though, they're doing Rebecca Gilman's The Sweetest Swing in Baseball and it's made critic Joe Adcock a believer:As a play crafter, Gilman is a wonder. Every scene, every character -- every speech, practically -- contains a surprise. The surprises build to neatly engineered climaxes and conclusions. But......

At the Starbucks in our West Seattle neighborhood this morning, a (chronically inattentive) cashier and a (disarmingly friendly) barista had the following exchange. Guess which employee is which. SBUX employee #1 (apropos of nothing): I hope Starbucks is coughing up pizza tonight. SBUX employee #2 (with a hint of sarcasm): Uh, that is incorrect. But Starbucks will be coughing up a bunch of espresso shots. SBUX employee #1 (trailing off): Well, I’m going to......

Before we moved our worldly possessions across Elliott Bay to West Seattle, we'd never visited that neighborhood's Beveridge Place Pub. And we'd never tasted 3-Grid IPA, an excellently hoppy product of that neighborhood's Schooner Exact Brewing Co. Now that we pose as West Seattle regulars, we recognize both pub and brewer as priceless neighborhood gems; there's no better place to kill a few (happy) hours, and no finer micro-local IPA. So it's with great......

Photo by cory schmitz from the Seattlest Flickr PoolNorth Seattle got snow, West Seattle didn't. Issaquah got snow, Federal Way didn't. The picky snow has made for an odd commute. We were rolling down an iceless hill this morning near Renton, annoyed that the person in front of us was proceeding with such outsized caution. At the bottom of the hill, we saw a Geo that had spun into a ditch. Guess it was icy......

With everyone still nursing their post-NYE hangover, there's not much going on this weekend in terms of live music. In fact, your best venue bet for the foreseeable future is Chop Suey. Head there tonight to help Unscrew the Croc Employees with a all-local lineup including Coconut Coolouts, The Intelligence, The Girls, and Das Llamas.
