Act Like a Zombie This Saturday (Alcohol Optional)

Halloween is Saturday (in case you don't have a calendar, television, or friends) so why not treat yourself to some dress-up after time spent corrupting small children's stomachs with sugar?

Seattle's own enfant terrible, Gabriel Claycamp (well, not exactly terrible but kinda naughty nonetheless, what with serving wine at his Culinary Communion cooking classes without the proper licenses) finally seems to have his shit together. That would be his pigshit, just so you know. Yes, the long-awaited Swinery, Temple of Porcine Love, is now open in West Seattle. Our friend Jacqueline Pruner sends a few pix that show what seems to be a shack, but inside there's a lovingly stocked meat case.

Can't Miss It: Wednesday

IS THAT FUNK I SMELL?: George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, objectively speaking the best funk band in the world, play the Showbox SoDo tonight. We can’t think of anything to say about this that hasn’t been said, except that you owe it to yourself to see Clinton perform--after 50 years in the industry, he still brings it.

Happy Beer Hour, Part Two

Beveridge Place Pub, West Seattle ("Micro" Mondays 3 p.m. to close). Known for their willingness to accommodate man's other best friend, look to this alehouse with over 22 handles as a nice respite from the heat outside for you and your dog. Look out for $3 Red Dot pints and $12 pitchers.

Teenaged Sweeney Todd Surmounts Our Skepticism

The wonderful thing about attending even a student production of Steven Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, like the one playing Wednesday-Saturday at ArtsWest in West Seattle (tix), is that you know the singing will be better than in the movie version.

PARK IT FOR REGGAE: From noon to 1:30 p.m., enjoy the pure roots reggae and live dub of Clinton Fearon & The Boogie Brown Band. That's downtown in our urban rest stop, Westlake Park. It's part of the Summer in the City series, and their site even includes a list of to-go food options nearby. If you can't decide, probably your best one-stop lunch option is the Westlake Mall Food Court.

Seal Pupping Season Begins, Babysitters Needed

Seal pupping season has begun, which means those cute widdle furry seal pups will soon enough start popping up on West Seattle beaches. And when they do--watch the seal cam!--the Seal Sitters, an all-volunteer seal superhero group will be on the lookout. This year the group needs more trained helpers on the beaches, protecting the resting seal pups from curious dogs and the "I want to pet it!" type of people.

Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, June 26-28

WEENIE BLESSING: Eat a free weenie with pride! The BottleNeck Lounge kicks off Gay Pride with a weekend of free hot dogs (and no cover!) on Friday, June 26th at 10:00 p.m., with the fabulous Gina Bling of Team Gina, who will give The Third Annual Hot Dog Blessing. On Saturday and Sunday, the bar will be providing freshly grilled dogs (both veggie and non) to hungry gays and non-gays alike. Fri-Sun. // BottleNeck Lounge, 2328 E. Madison St. // No Cover (21+)

Yesterday at the Southwest Community Center in West Seattle, a 12-year-old girl filled up her backpack with rocks, and then proceeded to haul off and beat a 12-year-old boy over the head. Understandably, times have changed. But we thought young crushes still resulted in the scenario: girl likes boy, girl would playfully kick or punch a boy to let him know she likes him--but not stone or beat him to death. We hope the police reiterated that after they released the young girl to her parents. As for the boy, he suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was later taken to Harborview Medical Center.

We'd like to take credit for this, but we didn't plug the King County Water Taxi until last week. The West Seattle Herald (and @westseattleblog) are reporting ridership between downtown and West Seattle was up 20 percent in May compared to last May, a total of 31,557. To plan your sailing schedule, click here.

It just wants a cuddle. Just like us, dear Reader, just like us... Come a little closer and drop something into the pool, won't you please?

Anti-tunnel mayoral candidate Mike McGinn, who just picked up endorsements from the 37th District Ds and the Sierra Club (Nickels snagged the Washington Conservation voters' love), claims a new poll shows him winning handily if only everyone in Seattle knew he was against that $4.2-billion boondoggle tunnel. The poll his campaign commissioned shows 64 percent of Seattle voters are against building a tunnel, just like Mike "Tunnel Over My Dead Body" McGinn. The rest live in West Seattle, and just don't realize their transportation needs have already been met.

Yesterday being a gorgeous day with the sun shining and temperatures in the 70s, we decided to finally do something we've been thinking about for some time: Take the King County Water Taxi over to West Seattle for the helluvit.

Dishin': Creme Brulee at Fresh Bistro

We should have seen it coming. The folks at Fresh Bistro, the new West Seattle restaurant from Herban Feast, throw fresh into all that they prepare.

The lead-footed driver of a Porsche Carrera woke up West Seattle's Alki neighborhood early this morning, after driving the car straight into the Puget Sound. Having overlooked the curve in the road, the driver and his fast-moving and pretty-penny-of-a-car went flying off the road, over the seawall, and submerged about 10 yards offshore. The male driver in his 50s managed to escape from the sinking car uninjured. Police officers were able to tow the car out of the water shortly after the crash.

BALLET (PREL-jzoh-cahjz): Not your average night at the ballet, as the evocative Ballet Preljocaj (choreographed by company founder Angelin Preljocaj) company will perform Les 4 Saisons--a UW World Series debut. Choreographed to the bright and rhythmic music from Vivaldi, Les 4 Saisons provides a playful, colorful, and unconventional interpretation through dance.

Yes, there's snow on the ground, but on Sunday, April 5, the most-awaited emblem of spring in Seattle finally arrives: the Elliott Bay Water Taxi begins its run, wrapping up in fall on October 31. (As you know, residents of West Seattle begin their winter hibernation about then, and have no need of transportation across the perilously stormy Elliott Bay.)

It's all of nearly two as we write this, and we could already use a tall cold one. In anticipation of the end of the workweek, we checked out Seattle Beer News, and sure enough, God bless 'em, there's at least three decent beer events this weekend. Tonight Water 1st, an organization dedicated to bringing water, sanitation, and public health to the poorest communities around the world, is hosting their Water 1st, Beer 2nd fun(d)raiser in South Lake Union tonight at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 and you can enter a raffle for a Hawaiian vacation. But if you're less social justice-minded (or just cheap), you can head to either the Elysian for their winter brewfest Saturday, or out to West Seattle's Beveridge Place Pub for their week-long barleywine festival, where you can drink yourself under the table without all the fuss, like a normal person.

The lanes, they are a-changing. Magnolia Voice has a heads-up on upcoming changes to 15th Avenue West. And next week you may want to hoof it to the Center of the Universe since Fremont will lose some of of its free parking. Over in West Seattle, they're pondering parking in the Junction, and West Seattle Blog invites you to tell the parking planners where to put it. The pay spaces, that is. If you're scared to drive anywhere and you live in Ballard, at least you won't starve: Amazon Fresh is beginning delivery to the 98107 and 98117 zips.

A Ballard woman died after injuries sustained in yesterday's head-on collision on the Fremont Bridge. West Seattle Blog has a photo of the White Center lotto-ticket bandit who may also be responsible for a Fauntleroy heist. If crime and death and taxes have you down, our hilarious college classmate Eugene Mirman is reading at the University Bookstore tonight from his faux self-help book, The Will to Whatevs.

We can't get enough stimulus, and still we're exhausted. We feel like Richard McIver, who just announced his retirement from Seattle City Council, saying "I want to go home and sit down." Should we ever be up for a walk, West Seattle Blog has info on the plans for Alki Point's sidewalks and Mayor Nickels asks you to volunteer in his State of the City, which is a good thing since few of us still have paying jobs. Maybe we'll find work at Costco or Target, two stores that will stock the soon-to-be wildly popular Starbucks instant coffee-flavored product.

Amanda Knox testified (in fluent Italian!) that she's innocent and, perhaps even less convincingly, that the pink rabbit-shaped vibrator was a joke. On the PG-13 side of the news, the envelope goes to the West Seattle blog for revealing that recent Mateo Messina, who won a Grammy for the Juno soundtrack, turns out to be a native son. Native sons and daughters of Ballard residents may be torn asunder, if Seattle school boundary changes take effect, according to MyBallard.
