No one's saying anything, but the clouds look pretty dark for the mall's current owners. The Wall Street Journal reports that Chicago's General Growth Properties have hired very specific legal help, bringing on "the law firm Sidley Austin as bankruptcy counsel while it negotiates with lenders for more time to restructure its $27 billion debt load." If Westlake isn't the market already, the auction block is becoming a distinct possibility.

After all, the Seattle P-I's got a story on the recent street violence, the Seattle Times has coverage of the war zone and the thug factor. And although three of the four incidents since June occurred after 10pm, it's easily worth the $500,000 the city will spend over the next four months to keep lunch hour safe in Westlake Park. We were there, and we've never felt more secure -- which was great because we couldn't find any bike racks in front of Westlake Mall and had to lock our bike to a trash can.

There's a national transportation bigwig in Seattle today pledging flood relief and the like. Transportation secretary Mary Peters is a Bush appointee, though, so if the rebuilding of NOLA is any indication Rainier will probably erupt before the flood-damaged areas around it are repaired.
We spent Sunday morning sitting in front of Top Pot donuts downtown just watching the world go by. There were tall people, short people, a lot of white people, but absolutely no monorails. The concrete tracks which whisk people safely from Westlake Center to Seattle Center ---and, thank the good Lord, nowhere else in this city (oh and by the way, we're being sarcastic)---remain unused as a result of the humpin' and bumpin' of two trains back in November.
