Then head on down to Westlake Park, where Toyota has set up "Solar Flowers" to promote their new Prius. The flowers, which are powered by solar panels on the back of their petals and on their stems, provide wi-fi (free) and power to charge cell phones and laptops. They look as if Dr. Seuss had been given an engineering budget. They'll be available August 29 to September 7 from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. daily (this coincides nicely with the Seattle Public Library's weeklong closure). If you're a Luddite or prefer to pay for your power, you can still enjoy the sight of six-foot tall dandelions looming in Westlake Park.

Start Camping Out Now for Light Rail Launch

Last night we dropped in at the Seattle Transit Blog meet-up, and ran into Sound Transiteers Andrew and Rebecca, who were filling us in on their crowd control preparations for the July 18 opening of the Westlake-Tukwila light rail line.

For all of two hours today in South Lake Union, you can view the new hydrogen-powered vehicles from the auto powers-that-be at Seattle's first Hydrogen Car Show. It's no two-week long Detroit auto show, but from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. today everyone can check out the cutting edge designs and crazy fuel alternatives at Propel Fuel's biodiesel flagship station off Westlake Ave. And maybe--just-maybe (fingers crossed)--we might get a glimpse of Tesla's new showroom. 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. // Propel Station, 609 Westlake Avenue North // Open to the public

The California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8--which bans legal recognition of same-sex marriages--yesterday, sparking a wave of protests across the country. Here in Seattle, a "Day of Decision" rally was held downtown at Westlake Center. The Stranger reports State Senator Ed Murray was ambivalent about attending, saying, "so few people are willing to get off their butts to do something about marriage equality here, in the state where they themselves live." But of course he showed, along with Rep. Jamie Pedersen (photo) and a host of others. Hundreds of people crowded Westlake, and afterwards a smaller number took the chance to march up to Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill. Check out Seattlest Flickr Pool member subsetsum's "Day of Decision" photoset for a full chronicling.

Tesla, Can We Drive Your Car?

So the makers of the electro-rocketcar are opening a Seattle Tesla-emporium on Westlake. The Tesla Roadster is said to hit 60 in under four seconds and tops out at 125 mph (some kinda rev limiter). It goes over 200 miles on a charge.

Devastating news for most adolescents as their favorite malls--and parent-free hang-outs--are facing bankruptcy. General Growth Properties Inc., the nation's second-largest mall operator, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, which owns local mall properties: Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood, Bellis Fair Mall in Bellingham, and Westlake Center in Seattle. With their stock prices cheaper than an on-sale pack of gum, financial reorganization will be key, for what's been claimed as the largest real estate failure. We just hope it can turn around, so it doesn't force a void (and access to the Monorail) in downtown.

Busiest shopping day of the year, nexus of downtown Seattle commerce, the hard core of the retail core: Westlake Mall. And what do we have? Well, people doing their holiday shopping, of course. And getting ready for the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas Tree. But who are those spoilsports with the signs, already? Ah, that would be the protesters, the anarchists, the enemies of the public good. So nicely dressed, too. So polite, so well-groomed. Those signs, what do they say? Down with the capitalist state? No, the signs are actually encouraging commerce. "Buy More Stuff," they implore. "Hurry," they urge.

Ever notice the big tree at the North end of Macy’s sitting on that tiny island in the middle of Stewart Avenue? Is it us, or is that thing fading faster than Christine Gregoire's chances of being re-elected?
