SDOT has just sent us a freaking packed list of weekend events that will result in traffic jams, parking space jams, and closed-street jams. Capitol Hill is basically closed to cars starting tonight, and that's not counting the Greenwood Car Show, Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, Children's Ride, or the Sounders game.

Memorial Day at Seattlest

Seattlest is on holiday today, so we'll be posting lightly. While you're enjoying this terrific three-day-weekend weather, give a moment to remembering those who suited up and served and died. CNN points out that Memorial Day's origins were an attempt to heal the wounds of the Civil War, so we present Walt Whitman's "Vigil Strange I Kept on the Field One Night" after the jump.

ONE WEEKEND ONLY

That's what we hear from KIRO 7, anyway. Cliff Mass says the convergence zone--our nemesis!--is creating snow conditions above 500 feet. But wait! There's more! After a sunny Friday, a cold front moves in courtesy of our Canadian "friends," and on Sunday "the models are insistent about the creation of a Puget Sound convergence zone...and if they are right it will be cold enough for snow." Also, the temperatures might get down into the 20s for a few nights. What's that noise Sideshow Bob makes when a rake smacks him in the face? Yeah, we're making that noise.

Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, February 27-March 1

THE KING IS DEAD: King Cobra, we hardly knew ye (though Katelyn had nothing but good things to say about your friendly confines). The Capitol Hill club in Sugar's former space never really found its music niche, and considering it's right next door to the Comet and across the street from Neumo's, we're not that surprised it's closing. Tonight the venue goes out with a bang, hosting one last show with an all-local lineup: Neon Nights, All Bets On Death, The Altar Boys, Flexx Bronco, The Pranks, The Valkyries, The Greatest Hits, Hypatia Lake, Blue Ribbon Boys, The Wrecked Chords, and Pain Cocktail. It's your last chance to check out the club, and it's free, so go give 'em some love.

Anti-DOMA, Pro-Israel Rallies This Weekend

Perhaps it's a resurgence of energy after the post-holiday blues that galvanized city activists to gather in solidarity against world problems this weekend. There were two rallies we know of: yesterday's 1,500-strong pro-Israel rally at Temple De Hirsch Sinai on Capitol Hill, and a gay rights protest march from Capitol Hill to Westlake Center on Saturday. The pro-Israel rally was the larger and better-organized of the two; as Dominic Holden over at Slog notes, the anti-DOMA march was poorly attended and organized by a small, inexperienced group without the help of Equal Rights Washington. (Our apologies if the headline makes it seem like the anti-DOMA and pro-Israel camps had anything to do with each other, because they sure didn't.)

CD News has an update on the Chop Suey shooting that took place over the weekend. They say it was the result of a "long-running dispute" between one of the victims and one of the shooters (a dispute that "included a drive-by shooting" says Seattle 911). "The first of the two suspects, 25-year-old Roger Labranche of Everett, was arrested at the scene of the crime on Sunday morning after he had been grabbed and detained by clubgoers in the aftermath of the shooting. The second, Carlos Bernandez, 18, was arrested by the SWAT team at his parent's residence in Seattle yesterday afternoon following a stakeout. He later confessed his role in the shootings to police." The two suspects are being held on $2 million bail.

Dear readers: There comes a time in every blog's life when no matter how good things have been going--and they have been good--when you see an upgrade and you get to thinking... Well, it's an old, old story. The long and short of it is, we're going to be taking a little time off from you this weekend. We hope--we swear this is true--that it's just for a few hours, just until we get our database straight. But you know how it goes. Sometimes...things come up. Maybe you'll be there when we come out the other side. We hope you will be. We have pictures of slushy streets to share. Oh, they're really slushy. Just how you like.

How did this sneak up on us? The 2008 Winter Beer Festival starts today at 5 p.m. and goes 'til 10. Then it starts up again tomorrow from 1-10 p.m. 30 Washington breweries present their winter goods (here's the list) for your inspection; your admission includes a tasting cup and six 5-oz. beer samples.

We're looking for the perfect place to get some computer-y work done this weekend. Because Obama was elected president, we have hope that such a perfect place exists. Requirements: must have coffee, must have wifi, and must not have the music turned up to 11. Preferred extra qualities: good food, a fireplace, and an interesting view (maybe even of the water). Seattlest is willing to drive north, south, or even to the Eastside for this perfect place. Suggestions? We'd settle for an almost-perfect four or five of the six listed qualities.

After wearing a cow costume all day at work and handing out candy to adorable chitlins, Jack is going home to do absolutely goddamn nothing this weekend because he will have just worked nineteen days in a row.

Jay is flying off to New Jersey to attend his niece's bat mitzvah (and to perhaps find good pizza in the Big Apple), and then goes on to Kentucky to see what life is like there the week before the election. hump

It'd be easy to bitch and complain about certain aspects of the Capitol Hill Block Party. Sure, it attracts a bevy of tools who by the end of the night are barely-standing drunken douchebags. And yes, you have to put up with the poorly-scripted political pablum in between acts. Plus, in the aftermath, there's all that garbage. But in the midst of the typical festival chaos, there are plenty of things to praise about this year's block party. Here's our list:

Holy Jeezits, what an outstanding weekend!

HUGE AMOUNTS OF CHEESE: The Cheese Festival is upon us! This is one of our top three favorite events of the year (#2: our birthday, #3: Christmas). Several reasons: a city block full of cheese, friendly vendors, wholesale prices on bottles in the wine garden (don't buy the red wine that says "bacon" three times in its description, we made that mistake last year), and (it bears repeating) a city block full of cheese.

10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday // Washington State Convention Center, 800 Convention Pl // Two Day Pass: $30, Saturday Only: $20, Sunday Only: $15

Ahh spring. So wonderful and yet so fickle. Thankfully for us, spring was fully sprung Saturday when we took the wife up to Lopez Island to celebrate her birthday by riding in the annual Tour de Lopez.

Saturday, Tera will give herself a VIP tour at the opening of Aritzia. She will follow this potentially hectic event by introducing a friend to her newest wine obsession - Twisted Cork. Sunday she will trek to Qwest and root for Chicago, uh, eh, oops...Seattle. Yes, root for the Seahawks. Jack's heading to the Showbox proper tonight to see Canadian indie pop band Stars. Sunday, he's hoping to see Rex Grossman slip into old...

We've already mentioned this weekend's Pyramid Alehouse Snowed In Party, featuring the Presidents of the USA (tonight) and the Dandy Warhols (tomorrow). Tonight, there's also Black Dice bringing their wall o' noise to the Vera Project.
