MvB is off to SIFF Cinema for Preston Sturges' Depression-era fable, Sullivan's Travels, and then there's a going-away party for a friend on pilgrimage, held in the medieval pageantry of Canterbury's.

Local photographer Jenny Jiménez got robbed big time. Some skeevy dudes broke into her house and stole a whole mess of shit worth over $20K, including photography equipment, computers, and her mother's wedding ring, which Jenny was going to use in her own nuptials this fall. Way to go, assholes. From her LiveJournal post:

If the sampling includes exactly Seattlest's commitment-phobic friend who just bought his first condo and the participants in a recent office conversation, then absolutely everyone is moving to West Seattle. Per that conversation there are only two things West Seattle doesn't have: wedding dresses and a Trader Joes. Oh, and jobs. And pull with the city government. Four things! Yes, if it weren't for weddings, two-buck chuck and work there would be no reason to ever leave the burrough. It must truly be a paradise.

Last year, we had the joy of walking around town before the precarious date of 6/6/06 and seeing images of nuclear holocaust strung across every light poll in town (meaning on Capitol Hill). This year, we get the pleasure of anticipating our big 3-0 on a far more auspicious date: 7/7/07.

McMenamins, a Portland-based chain of hotels, restaurants and brew pubs, submitted a 2005 letter of intent to lease the seminary building and turn it into a hotel with a restaurant and a conference center.

Why is it that all the of the really seductive ideas that are flowing out of Seattle right now and gaining currency around the country come from groups that we barely acknowledge the existence of, much less revere as city institutions? First, intelligent design has its fifteen minutes in the sun, and now Mars Hill is taking over the planet, at least according to Salon this week.

Earth Day may be bullshit, but Group Health's Bike Commute Challenge has got some brains behind it. They've realized that asking people to do something good for themselves and/or the environment for just one measly day doesn't do much for either party involved. Participants don't get a longer-term perspective on how their activity of choice might be enjoyable and make them feel better, and one day does not a better environment make, in truth.

Yesterday's paper had a mention of Seattlest's favorite boat (see the dramatization to the right from Seattlest's early months in 2005). At least it was our favorite boat before we had to give it up to Tacomaist. The Kalakala made the paper yesterday after its owner sent some email to a number of preservation groups in Seattle outlining his plan to get the ferry back to Seattle within three years. His target slip? Coleman Dock. Aim high, Steve Rodrigues. The back-to-Seattle plan seems to indicate that all is not smooth sailing down south despite his application to Tacoma’s Landmarks Preservation Commission.
