Oh Snap! Water Main Break in Wedgwood

This afternoon a 12-inch water main broke in Wedgwood, near the corner of NE 80th Street and 24th Avenue NE. Homeowners are in for a soggy surprise, a reported six homes have already been flooded as the water continues to gush throughout the neighborhood. No time estimate until Seattle Public Utilities can stop the leak and begin repairing the main. more ›

News From Around the Local Waterways

Opening Day for boating season is just a few weeks out, but the news stories are already starting to come in from off the water. This morning, ferry workers had a rough start to their day as they discovered a body of an adult male around 8:30 a.m. under the Pier 52 Colman Dock. On Saturday, a tugboat sunk to the bottom of Lake Washington--near Kenmore--spilling 40-50 gallons of diesel fuel into the lake; they refloated the tug on Sunday. Don't worry, the state's Department of Ecology is on it. Over by the Ship Canal, one guy realized that the sky wasn't falling on his car, but parts of the Ship Canal Bridge were. Thankfully for him, yesterday proved to be a great day for a sun roof. more ›

Life on the Duwamish

The other day—which is Seattlest-speak for "about two weeks ago"—the Port of Seattle offered the third in their series of Port 101 tours. This one sailed from Pier 66 down the Duwamish Waterway. The , of course, is that lower portion of the Duwamish River that has been straightened, channelized, and dredged into a human-made representation of its former self. But evidence of the past remains. If you take a close look at the street plat of the Georgetown area, you'll see swaths where, illogically it seems, there are no streets.
