Someone doesn't want you to know about Seattle's water supply--they yanked an interpretative display off the wall of the Volunteer Park Water Tower. But someone else does want you to know: his name is Stokely Towles, which we half-consider to be made-up. He describes his Waterlines installation (also at Volunteer Park, in a trailer on the road between SAAM and the Conservatory) like so:
Seattle's Cool, Clear Water Is Star of Waterlines
Seattle Among Least Wasteful Cities
We're number four on the list, behind San Francisco, New York, and Portland. SF and NYC we can see, because the data says that density equals more efficient use of resources, but Portland...come on.
Lake Union To Lose Really Old Schooner
Around 8 a.m. today, you may have noticed Lake Union looking a little more weepy than usual--and for good reason. That was when the beloved Wawona, a really old schooner, moved to the dry docks on other side of the lake in order to begin the slow death of dismantlement after some 30 years beautifying the waterfront. Decades-long efforts to raise enough money to renovate the ship finally lost steam in the march towards creating a more perfect Union. (Har, har.) All this shippy hullaballoo reminds us of the Kalakala debacle. Apparently the Kalakala is now scheduled to be restored in 2010, potentially to be converted into a future museum site; has owner Steve Rodrigues considered purchasing the Wawona as well? It could be a really cool, touristy floating bar!

Seattle Man Found Dead In Elliott Bay
A passerby spotted the body of a 38-year-old Seattle man under a pier in Elliott Bay this morning and promptly called police. Investigations are underway. We know what you're thinking, but yes, both of the man's feet were still attached. More information to come.
Coffee, WiFi, And A Fireplace?
We're looking for the perfect place to get some computer-y work done this weekend. Because Obama was elected president, we have hope that such a perfect place exists. Requirements: must have coffee, must have wifi, and must not have the music turned up to 11. Preferred extra qualities: good food, a fireplace, and an interesting view (maybe even of the water). Seattlest is willing to drive north, south, or even to the Eastside for this perfect place. Suggestions? We'd settle for an almost-perfect four or five of the six listed qualities.
A Summer Sail on Lake Union, in Photos
Just in case you forgot why you live in Seattle, a photo-refresher course. A rum drink really sets the mood, if you have anything like that handy.
For Your Consideration: SIFF This Weekend
Another weekend, another opportunity to check out the films at SIFF. If you're into the short film genre, SIFF Cinema hosts ShortsFest all weekend long, with short films packaged by theme in approximately ninety-minute blocks. For all SIFF screenings, the general/member ticket prices are $11/$9 (and matinees $8/$7), except for gala screenings and other special events, which cost more. Seattlest applies our well-honed knowledge of all things cinema to the SIFF catalogue in order to point out some notable films playing this weekend:
