Thursday Morning Headlines

People are really terrible people to children. Also: Occupy Seattle protests still going strong with or without tents, Amanda Knox gets offered some cash for some storytelling, some seniors get some money they were scammed out of back, and talking on your cell phone while you're driving is still illegal. Oh, and that election's coming up in a month, in case you forgot. more ›

Icy Streets Unleash Motorized Mayhem and More

The Seattle Times says "between 4 and 9 a.m., the Washington State Patrol logged 52 accidents, including five with injuries, on major highways in King County." But you'll only read on Seattlest how dangerous the corner of Broadway East and East Aloha was. That's where our bike slid out from under us and we still somewhat sleepily glided along the road for a few feet. Ironically, we'd been checking for ice farther up the hill, but there we were in the sunshine and the frost had melted. A shady corner in the flats was our undoing. We've been biking around the Hill for almost three years now and that was our first spill. Sort of anticlimactic. more ›

Watch Your Speed On I-5

Thirty-seven Washington State troopers on motorcycles will be scrutinizing the behavior of drivers on I-5 today and tomorrow in what the P-I reports is a two-day push against dangerous freeway speed and aggression. That means if you're on I-5 in the next couple of days, 84% of the state's motorcycle troopers will be dedicating their full resources towards disciplining bad behavior on the road. It's all too easy to cruise way over 60mph during non-peak traffic hours, so be careful out there or you might find yourself with a ticket. (Put down those cell phones, too....) more ›

State Supreme Court Unanimous on Marijuana Ruling

The state Supreme Court unanimously overturned a 30 year-old precedent which allowed Washington State Police to arrest an entire car-load of people if the officer even smelled marijuana. Now, if a police officer pulls you over and approaches you because they smell chronic, they have the right to search your car for proof of the drugs. But, they can no longer just arrest you based on a cop's sensitive sniffer. Considering the continued aggression the SPD and WSP have shown towards marijuana users—even to those who have a pot prescription for medicine—this ruling is a bright spot in dark times. more ›

Proof a Joke About a Bomb Is Never Taken as a Joke

Proof a Joke About a Bomb Is Never Taken as a Joke

When will people learn that a joke about having a bomb is never taken as a joke? We believe this statement has always been true, but is especially so in our heightened state of paranoia about security. Just to reiterate this truth, two Seattle gentlemen temporarily halted ferry service on Sunday, after making a joke about placing a bomb in the trunk of their car. more ›

Two DUIs in One Day

A Seabeck, Wash., man was arrested twice in one day for Driving Under the Influence. The 48-year-old man was pulled over twice by State Troopers on Friday for driving while intoxicated. The man was arrested once Friday morning with a blood-alcohol level of five times the legal limit. After being released, he must have gotten right back to drinking, because he was arrested that same night with a blood-alcohol level of four times the legal limit. more ›
