When will people learn that a joke about having a bomb is never taken as a joke? We believe this statement has always been true, but is especially so in our heightened state of paranoia about security. Just to reiterate this truth, two Seattle gentlemen temporarily halted ferry service on Sunday, after making a joke about placing a bomb in the trunk of their car.

It seems every time we check a local news site, which is pretty regularly...okay hourly, there's a report of another malfunctioning ferry. According to our unscientific, educated guesstimate, The Washington State Ferry Service has only had a few days of normal running schedules in the past month.

Seattle Police, or the Washington State Ferry system, or the FBI, or whatever shadowy anti-terrorist unit is in charge of this particular investigation hasn't contacted Seattlest at this time. They haven't asked us into the evidence room in the basement of some nondescript building and opened the box containing the suspicious device they found in a Seattle/Bainbridge ferry bathroom and asked us to identify it. We can identify it, however, and you probably can too if you ever smoked pot in a college dorm.

We knew Bremerton residents were the step-chilins of the Washington State Ferry System, but now that wireless access for the 55-minute run has been delayed again we're starting to suspect a conspiracy. Bainbridge has been happily browsing away on their 30-minute jog since like the mid-nineties or something, but can Bremerton catch any of that wifi gold? Hell no. At least not until July at the earliest. Of course, the Rich Passage is the official culprit according to Parsons which has the contract to provide wireless internet to Washington ferries.

Did you know there was passenger ferry service from Kingston to Seattle (and vice versa, of course)? Apparently not enough of you did, or cared, because the private passenger-only ferry service provided by Aqua Express will have a big "Out of Order" sign on it as of October 1 (last day of service is September 30). It was carrying only half the projected ridership, and that combined with ever-rising fuel costs, made it a harder sell when compared to the Washington State Ferry, which doesn't charge on the eastbound routes.
