Video: SPD Releases Footage of Occupy Protesters Provoking Officers

Despite statements from those who attended this week's protest at the Port of Seattle, the Seattle Police Department, who apparently have plainclothes videographers and photographers on standby to record such events, have released video that shows protesters throwing large items, including road flares and bags of paint, at officers. more ›

The Long Winters has only been John Roderick and some friends to do the backing instrumentals since Sean Nelson split off and formed Harvey Danger. We caught the duo singing "Putting the Day to Bed" for your viewing pleasure. more ›

City Arts Fest Preview: Crystal Castles

City Arts Fest Preview: Crystal Castles

Crystal Castles will be taking over Showbox Sodo on Thursday. As much as all that concrete is troubling, the pure expanse of it seems ideal for a little bit of their chaotic beep-boop explosion. They're a must-see element of City Arts Fest. more ›

The Meat and the Message: Kickstarter for Vashon's Farmstead Meatsmith

The clock is ticking on Farmstead Meatsmith’s Kickstarter project: a series of free instructional webisodes on butchery processes or dishes. Lauren and Brandon Sheard own and operate Farmstead Meatsmith; they are working with filmmaker Andrew Plotsky on the project. Andrew, who is also the Sheards’ apprentice, had plenty to say about the how’s and why’s of small-scale butchery, harvesting, and meat processing. more ›

Music Kickstarter of the Week: Nightgowns

We've found a great little treasure for this week's Kickstarter spotlight project. Searching around the site, there's not a whole lot to be found vis-a-vis music in Seattle at this moment, so this time, we reached out to other towns nearby. more ›

Hot Bodies Rocks the Showbox Tonight and Gives Seattlest the Lowdown

Hot Bodies Rocks the Showbox Tonight and Gives Seattlest the Lowdown

You may or may not have heard of Hot Bodies in Motion (HBIM), but you have to admit it's a killer name--even if you have no idea who they are. Here at Seattlest, we've come to know and love this band for one very good reason: they don't play folk/Americana/singer-songwriter style tunes. In fact, that might be the very reason you haven't heard about them. more ›

Video: The Local Strangers Serenade Seattlest Music

As the epic date of our first Seattlest Music Presents show approaches, we can hardly contain our excitement. Over the last month, we've introduced you to the melodic stylings of The Elderly, the gorgeous harmonies of The Local Strangers and the acoustic beauty of Andrew Vait. But discussions weren't the only things to be had at each of these meetings--we also managed to get some sneak peeks at what we'll be hearing at the show. more ›

Video: New Song from Head and the Heart

If you haven't checked out the official video for Lost in My Mind yet, then you definitely should. It's fun and quirky. We have to admit though, it's not exactly what we'd envisioned for a Head and the Heart video. Until now, we weren't exactly sure why we felt that way. It was sweet and used lots of interesting lighting and lamps straight from Seattle fans' living rooms. The beginning of the video where they walked through snow was odd but still kind of fun. In any case, this new video by Josh McBride brought to light what felt off about the official video. It just wasn't them. It wasn't the down to earth, basic beauty of what makes Head and the Heart so appealing to so many people. This new video helped us figure that out because it is exactly what we'd expect from the band. It's just them, sitting outside somewhere in the sun, doing what they do best: creating musical magic. We've heard this song a few times here and there (including the recent seattle performance), but it wasn't released on their album. We're really excited to share it with you and hope it satiates your need for new stuff from the band until they're able to slow down tour-wise and make a new record. more ›

Look Up! The Head and the Heart and Your Lamps

The Head and the Heart have gotten a lot of press lately, some bad but mostly good. How about we just forget all that, though, and watch some MTV. Their single "Lost in My Mind" now has a video. If you answered their call for lamps a month or so ago like we did, you might spend the first viewing looking for your living room accessory. We recommend you watch more than once if that's the case. more ›

Do Astronauts Eat Better Thanksgiving Dinners than You?

Astronauts eat freeze-dried T-rations, right? They eat half-frozen carbohydrate gruel, mystery meat, and dry, crumbly rolls coated with margarine from a toothpaste tube. Sheesh, the best part of an astronaut's meal is the freeze-dried ice cream. Right? more ›

So We Think We Can Dance

Episode 3 of this season of America's Best Dance Crew was on last night, and this week's challenge was to incorporate martial arts moves into each crew's dance routine. Local b-boys Massive Monkees drew extreme martial arts, a "rapid-fire, acrobatic style of martial art," as opposed to all those slow-moving, really clumsy forms. more ›

So We Think We Can Dance

On last night's episode of America's Best Dance Crew, Beyonce was there via video to assign each team a song and challenge for their performance. For local crew Massive Monkees, the song was "Work It Out" featuring the use of hula hoops. more ›

So We Think We Can Dance

Oh, hello America's Best Dance Crew. We're pretty sure we've never watched an entire episode of this MTV "dance" show--that's in quotes because out of the hourlong show, total time devoted to dancing seems to be somewhere around the seven-minute mark. But this season, local breakdancers Massive Monkees are hoping to be the fourth-straight ABDC champions to hail from the West Coast, so we suppose we should say something about it. more ›

Tres Tristes Tigres Serves Up Three Smart Solo Shows

Tres Tristes Tigres Serves Up Three Smart Solo Shows

Trinidad Martínez is co-founder of the Magpai Production Group--straight outta Hamburg--and is in the U.S. on a Fullbright. She collaborated with each of the solo performers of Tres Tristes Tigres: Emma Klein, Dayton Allemann, and Jonas Radvik. She's also likely to be the one taking your tickets and offering you a glass of water. But the fringe-theater, many-hats staffing aside, the work you see rivals OtB in its commitment--and shows off Dani Prados' lighting and technical design chops. more ›

Jason Lytle Eludes Interview, Opens for Neko Thursday

It seems almost too perfect that technology is what ultimately derailed our interview with the famously technologically-wary Jason Lytle. With nothing but spotty cell phone reception as he traveled through Wyoming, the former frontman of Grandaddy was unable to find a signal that would last long enough to allow for a successful interview. more ›

How to Dress for the Monorail

Let's see more dresses and cardigans on the Monorail, please. At 1:46, the 1962 promo is just shy of a real-time Monorail trip. We were curious how the Monorail looked brand new (not that different)--sure, it's a little older, but it's the people who have changed. For fun, compare with this 2007 Monorail ride, which offers the jerky, handheld-cam impression that the train is about to lurch from the tracks and crush everyone below. more ›

POV Parkour Video Speeds You Through Seattle

Twitterer columbiacity brought this parkour YouTube video--shot one-handed in and around Seattle--to our attention, and we say thanks. It's an amazing amount of fun to watch this guy go. And Slate claims no one wants to advertise on YouTube's user-generated content. We just want more of this, less baby vomit. more ›

And Now a Friday Penguin Posse Video

AP photographer/videographer Ted Warren noticed we posted a video of the Woodland Park Zoo's new penguins yesterday and sent us this video to check out, featuring the Humboldt penguins and narration by the Zoo's penguin profiler Celine Pardo. It's an informative--and splashy--two minutes! more ›

Here's the Zoo's Posse of Penguins Video

Above you can see the Woodland Park Zoo's Humboldt penguins in their new, quasi-natural environment. The exhibit opens to the public on Saturday, May 2, so you have to content yourself with video for a little while yet. The Zoo tells us "the penguins, 10 males and 10 females, arrived three weeks ago from five other zoos and aquariums," and were put in quarantine. They range in ages from one to twenty years old, and you can adopt a penguin for just $50, though confidentially we hear you probably want to avoid the teenagers. more ›

They Live! Finally Release Video For "Weed Murder'

They Live! is Gatsby from Cancer Rising and DJ Bles One from Mash Hall. Not coincidentally, They Live! is also the bomb. We can vouch for that, having listened a large number of times to the first, sixteen minute episode of the absurdly good, theatrical, hilarious piece of hiphop they're calling the Dro Bots Saga. We've also gone completely bonkers along with the rest of the crowd during their rare live performances. Needless to say, Episode 1 of the Dro Bots Saga is mandatory downloading (here). Our favorite song from that installment is "Weed Murder," which has been getting some play on KEXP; now, there's a snazzy video to go along with the track. View now and become cooler by doing so: more ›
