Man, a tagger just cannot catch a break in this town! The Washington State Patrol is now using infrared to spot graffiti writers working on property that is, how you say...not legally designated for graffiti. That's serious dedication on the WSP's part. Does this strike anyone else as an eerily familiar smash-up of Fahrenheit 451 and The Giver?

Not everybody agrees graffiti has social value. One "artist's" urban enhancement is another man’s vandalism. We’re of the opinion that when left to the talented it’s generally a colorful and unique improvement to the city landscape. We understand those who disagree, but suspect they naturally hate anything to the left of the standard Belltown earth tone, which this city and its developer overlords keep insisting jibe with the character of the area.

If we were feeling snarky, we'd say it serves them right: after all, the vandalism of the booth is a mini-version of what the GOP leadership has done to the United States' image overseas in the past eight years, right? Poetic justice! But something about setting things on fire in the middle of a notoriously crowded festival strikes us as...well...inexcusably dangerous and short-sighted, even if what you're setting on fire symbolizes foreign and domestic policy of which you are very, very tired after eight years.

The Woods Coffee Shop in Bellingham was victim to two insults this weekend--theft and vandals who didn't take the care to spell their message properly. Someone caused over a thousand dollars of damage, smashing in a tempered window and plate glass. Also left behind at the scene of the crime, some misspelled political graffiti. "Facsism (sic) begins with the sale of public space" was stenciled on two of the remaining windows.
