Heavens to Etsy: UglyBaby Speaks

It's been a while since our last installment, but Heavens to Etsy is recommitted to getting you some crafty suggestions for holiday gifts. Where better to start than with UglyBaby, creator of Barter Sauce (a forum for trading odd art objects) and Unanimous Craft (a directory of independent business resources) AND EtsySaver (a way to get great deals on Etsy stuff) as well as a crafter of endearingly ugly shower art? Everyone knows someone who'd dig a weird art item to put in the shower. Read on to learn more about UglyBaby's origins as a knitting savant, interaction with dental hygienists, use of Goodwill toys, and development as a crafty businessperson. Some our our favorite moments from the conversation are in bold. more ›

A Look at Urban Craft Uprising's Winter Show

We stopped by the Urban Craft Uprising winter show this past weekend with a wallet full of cash and a hankering for hand-printed Christmas cards. The event got some pretty good press, and the Exhibition Hall at Seattle Center was pleasantly packed with a good crowd out to ogle the handmade wares of over 100 independent vendors. more ›

Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, Dec 4-Dec 6

BUYING HARDCORE: The 7th annual Punk Rock Flea Market returns to the Underground Events Center this Saturday with boxes upon bags of things random and rad. With 60-odd vendors selling most anything you can imagine, the PRFM is the season’s best bet for finding exactly the right present for each person on your list. Even cousin Bryan. We never know what to get him! The Flea Market is all-ages up until 8pm, when the live music kicks in and shouted negotiations begin in earnest. Proceeds from the event go to Low Income Housing Institute. more ›

Not Your Grandma's Stitch 'n' Bitch

If you’re one of those people who can’t even sew on a button, then you might be dubious about the extent to which such a skill could translate into a lucrative business. Well, it most certainly can and, based on the high number of giddy participants at Urban Craft Uprising this weekend, it often does. more ›

...But There Is Such a Thing as a Free Brunch

...But There Is Such a Thing as a Free Brunch

"I don't know much about these heart rummages," a friend said recently. "You go to them though, right?" And we havegone to them. Once. And it's been at least 18 months, since we were non-parents at the time. And we really liked it, so we're not sure exactly why we haven't been back, but back we haven't been. We didn't even realize it'd been taken over by Urban Craft Uprising, a local crafter event that... more ›

We Survived the Uprising

We Survived the Uprising

Urban Craft Uprising has their timing down. Most of the people we talked to at the show were there to do their Christmas shopping. While some diehard craftaholics were doing all of their shopping there, we settled for checking off half the people on our list. more ›

The Crafts Are Rising Up

The Crafts Are Rising Up

You absolutely have to go to Urban Craft Uprising this weekend at Seattle Center. If anyone tries to stand in your way tell them that it's to Christmas shop - Consumerism is a valid excuse for anything. Then, when you get there, shop for yourself. Buy like eight things you can't live without. When you get home you'll realize that your bank account dictates that you can indeed live without at least four of them. Wrap those up as Christmas gifts, but don't deliver them immediately. You've got another couple of weeks to save up and if everything works out well you may yet be able to keep them for yourself. more ›

2 Days, 2 Bumbershoot Posts

2 Days, 2 Bumbershoot Posts

Maybe we failed to give credit where credit was due yesterday in the Bumpershoots post. Some of the best stuff at the festival tends to not be music (notably the 826 thing from last year) and they have a lot of cool sounding events listed on their website that aren't music, but definitely are worthy of a mention. more ›
