Jon Talton has a great (i.e., it supports our position) piece in the Seattle Times about Boeing "overplaying its hand" with a new South Carolina love-nest. (That Vought plant is a union shop, and SC during a recession isn't in a position to write a lot of incentive checks.) Says Talton: "It's healthy to run a little scared in today's economy as long as you don't run over the edge of a cliff or throw others off. That's the risk with the most strident comments about the bad-business climate here. It's mostly a myth. And, in addition to being divisive because much of it translates into blaming workers or programs that benefit them, it obscures the real competitive issues that face us." Boom! Crosscut's Bill Richards has the story on Hearst's signal of disinterest: "Hearst Corp. said today that it won’t make a final $1 million payment to the Times’ majority owners, the Blethen family, for the right to bid first for the Blethens’ 50.5 percent stake in the company." Hearst also said that if they turn P-I into a pixel-only publication, they would do so outside the warm bosom of the JOA. But they haven't decided yet. "What's the big rush? Stop pestering us!" Meanwhile, the Seattle Times is in "survival mode," reports the Stranger--they're asking the unions for 12 percent payroll cuts. Longshoremen at the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma are conducting a walk-out today to protest U.S. military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. Despite warnings from a Union arbitrator that all longshoremen must report to work on Thursday, reports from the Port of Seattle say that only a handful of workers showed up for their scheduled shifts. Officials from the Port of Tacoma say that virtually all of their workers failed to report to work this morning. more ›
