As we mentioned on Friday, we've got a dinner invitation of sorts for you tonight.
Wondering what the racket was in Belltown last night? A tamborrada. Here's the background.
End of year, thus time for the annual Belltown Bravo Awards. Yes, we'll add other neighborhoods in due course, we promise. In the meantime, don't get too excited; we're not. Hasn't been a particularly good year for restaurants in this nabe, in Seattlest's view. We lost some good ones (Cascadia, Qube, Marjorie), got some interesting new ones (Branzino, Kushibar, Tilikum Place, Spur) and the very promising Taberna del Alabardero, but overall, it hasn't been mouthwatering. Best promotions are still coming from the shoebox-sized Txori (the Tamborada, the San Firmin festival, the monthly Txoco dinners). For consistency and value, previous winners Steelhead Diner and Black Bottle continue to lead the pack. The real restaurant action these days is in Ballard, Capitol Hill, and (gulp) Bellevue.
In Pamplona this week, they're celebrating the festival of St. Fermin. The most famous event, the encierro, played a central role in Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises: the so-called "running of the bulls" through a narrow, 825-meter passage of narrow streets.
St. Germain has come marching into Belltown. Not the café from Madison Park, which closed earlier this year, but a French artisanal liqueur subtitled "Délice de Sureau," distilled from freshly picked elderflower blossoms. (The website, stgermain.fr, tells the story, probably aprocryphal, of a cohort of old men on bicycles gathering the flowers.)
You know how sometimes it seems like you read about the same damn thing every time you turn around? Like Britney. Or Ron Paul. Or the Sonics. It's going to happen again this week, and the name you'll be hearing is Txori. (Think "chirp," like a birdie.) It's the new Basque café (more accurately, a pintxos bar) in Belltown owned by Joseba Jimenez de Jimenez and his wife, Carolin Messier de Jimenez, the couple who own Harvest Vine in Madison Park. Well, this is their week.

Tuesdays are Muppet Days
