New Snow Plan Gets Social

Mayor Nickels took heavy fire for the City's handling of the storm. It certainly cost him some goodwill, and whoever our next mayor is, he'd better be equipped to respond to winter storms effectively and quickly if he expects his constituents to stay happy.

Brandon and Molly: Crossing Delancey

He's Brandon Pettit, musician from New York. She's Molly Wizenberg, the voice of Orangette. Their romance is chronicled in Molly's book, A Homemade Life (a title that makes you think it's going to be about an old lady's patterns for quilts, while it's actually two interwoven stories about Molly's dad and Molly's boyfriend). Anyway, Brandon--a composer and lecturer who studied in France (as did Molly)--moved to Seattle and, wouldn't you know it, decided that his calling life was (wait for it) pizza.

None of Seattle's typical "too cool for school" stand-offishness. Tens of thousands of cheerful riders, oohing and cooing, tweeting and twittering along SoundTransit's light rail line. Dozens of staffers in dayglo green shirts directed (human) traffic, and the trains (speedy, quiet) ran every ten minutes or so, tunneling under Beacon Hill and emerging high above MLK in Mt. Baker. (Big crowds expected at the Stadium station, where the MLS Sounders played Chelsea.)

Released via the Seattle Police Department Twitter feed, officers shot a man yesterday at Greenwood Ave. N and Holman Road, who is suspected in yesterday's Shoreline bank robbery and a string of other bank robberies. Prior to shots being fired, officers had spotted the bank robbery suspect stopped in traffic at Holman and 3rd Ave. with a stolen pick-up truck. A team of police cars quickly began to box in the truck. Trying to flee, the suspect rammed the stolen pick-up into a police car and a car carrying a father with his kids at the corner of Greenwood Ave. N and Holman Road. Police fired four shots, stalling the suspect who sustained injuries to his arm. The family of three was uninjured.

Via the ex-Soundgarden frontman's Twitter: "Driving from Poland to Berlin. Just heard Michael Jackson died. Makes me sad. I remember the Jackson 5 on a black and white tv. He had magic!"

NFL Quarterbacks: They're Just Like Us!

Matt Hasselbeck was stuck on a delayed flight from Newark to Seattle this morning. So how did Hass pass the time? By Tweeting!:

Neighborhood News and Local Blog Round-Up

When a Bear Visits Your School

Shoreline Schools has just released what we think is their first-ever guide to their newest ursine drop-in student. Sounds like they're taking an anti-bullying stance: "This morning a jogger reported seeing a bear behind Kellogg/Shorecrest headed into the Hamlin Park woods. Yesterday afternoon it was reportedly seen near Parkwood in the Twin Ponds area. As reported on the news, this type of bear is not a threat to people unless cornered. Our students have been advised to stay away from the bear if sighted."

Tonight, a Twitter Dinner with James Beard Nominees

As we mentioned on Friday, we've got a dinner invitation of sorts for you tonight.

Kurt Cobain's widow is supposedly all pissed off yet again, this time about moving men throwing out a dead bird that was actually a £8,000 piece of art by British taxidermy artist Polly Morgan. The piece of art was in Love’s bedroom, with its pedestal already packed to be sent to her new house; the bird was left sitting on a sideboard, and when the movers came, they threw it away. In response, Courtney fired her assistant. We scoured Ms. Love's completely unintelligible Twitter feed for any sic-heavy, crazy-ass, 140-character rants on the topic, and all we found were the following: "they threw out my El Pollo Loco the first Polly Morgan piece and she is gracious enought o find another embryonic chicken and put it under a belljar w a lil chandelier." and "Polly Morgan is a great artist and i thought this would stir uop a debate about art vs trash." Indeed.

We just added Q13's Parella Lewis to our Twittabase--we wanted to make sure we're bringing you a fair and balanced weather report--and already she's rewarded us by predicting a partly sunny weekend. Contrast this with Cliff Mass, working out of the notorious socialist stronghold of the UW, and his fixation on depressing graphs about the cold. As a caveat, four of Lewis's recent tweets mention drinking coffee to wake up and another one is a Thoreau quote, so it sounds like she's as desperate for sun as anyone else.

(H/t to Metblogs for finding SBX_IronChef.) Howard Schultz is rallying the troops this morning, and we've been eavesdropping via Twitter: "Great companies will evolve their strategies while retaining their core customer....We are the largest buyer of high grade arabica coffee that is Fair Trade in the world...We will be communicating this...Half of the beverages we sell are under $3, 1/3 under $2, and brewed coffee is a fantastic value...[on sales of Starbucks gift card at Costco] 2 weeks in, Costco ran out. It became the the #1 product in EVERY Costco location. (draws applause). 5 mill sold!"

Razorfish Looks into a Splintery Crystal Ball

Microsoft-owned Razorfish, one of the largest digital ad buyers in the world, has a new virtual book out, the 2009 Digital Outlook Report. These reports are very much documents of their moment--as Forbes points out, two years ago Razorfish was announcing that portals were back from the dead; this year portals have an icy gray hand clutching their ankles again.

You know what's exciting? We finally remembered to check the Seattlest Twitter account stats and 488 people are listening in. It's actually an easy way to keep track of headlines, if you're into that sort of thing. Twitter, we mean, not headlines. Everyone loves headlines! Also, last month we were hoping to break 3,000 RSS subscribers, and now there's 3,500 of you listening in that way. All we did was ask! Remember, RSS gives you options. If you're on Facebook, come on over to the Seattlest Facebook group, and you'll get special invitations to our happy hour meet-ups. What else? You've bookmarked us, right? Got us on your phone? Okay then.

Whoa, it's a motherfucking ghost town out right now. It's cold, but it ain't that cold. There, you just got twittered.

We Still Love Technology, Always And Forever

The internet is indeed alluring and the source of many pleasures, and locals just can't keep their hands off her. This morning, we learn that Washington state legislators are ga-ga for Facebook (late pass! but welcome) and that Mars Hill Church has given worshippers the go-ahead to tweet during services (...ugh). Careful, guys: the world wide web is a cruel mistress. Forgive the Napoleon Dynamite reference, it was unavoidable.

  • This is terrible, but when Seattlest noticed the weird new streetlights on 10th Avenue the other night, we thought, "No need to investigate just yet. Capitol Hill Seattle is probably already on it." And what do you know? They were.
  • The Washington Bus has Gary Payton rapping, of course, and an ode to Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles. The only thing better would be GP rapping about Kohl-Welles on the Washington Bus itself.
  • After reading Blogazar's post about Kurt Cobain and today's Capitol Hill, we would like to weigh in: Cobain would probably still live in the neighborhood, but he'd never come out of his apartment. He'd just have Zaw and heroin delivered to him on the daily and have a Twitter account.

Twitter Campaign For International Women's Day '09

For those of our readers using Twitter (and we know you are legion, you rascals), you have until the end of the day tomorrow to include the hashtag #apowerfulnoise in a tweet or two for the love of the world's women. For up to 50,000 tagged tweets posted between yesterday and March 5, National Cine-Media's Fathom will donate ten cents to human rights organization CARE.

Snow Monkeywrenches Seattle's Commute

The news over the wire (i.e., Twitter) is that the commute has not been pretty this morning, though it's improving except for 405 southbound, which is red and black on the map. For those of you still wondering where your bus is, take a look at Metro Tracker and the adverse weather/reroutes page. Savvy bus users tell us they swear by One Bus Away. They even have a blog for you to read while you're waiting for your bus. The One Bus Away Twitter feed has the absolutely latest bus news.

The same day the CityClub of Seattle was holding--and tweeting--its panel discussion "The Newspaper Business: Sunset or a New Dawn?" strange things were happening. The P-I linked directly to a story on the West Seattle Blog. KIRO 7 TV started filing stories on Twitter, following KING 5's lead, though KING 5 was using its Twitter feed today to promote its new Facebook page. News is suddenly everywhere. At the panel, tears were still being shed over Craigslist stealing all those classified ad dollars back in the late '90s--right about the time that everyone in the U.S. was reading Who Moved My Cheese? Ten years later, major newspaper chains are still at the mercy of a cramped, ugly, lo-fi site started by some guy in San Francisco. Hearst thinks the P-I is a money-loser; from where we're sitting, the guys who've been losing billions are in the corporate suites, paying themselves top dollar while they redesign the buggy whip paper to make it more attractive to younger readers.

Over at Capitol Hill Seattle they're going all i-team over the Howell airgun shooting. The Rainier Valley Post has got hints to where all the Valentine hearts are hidden in Hillman City. MyBallard has the pre-opening news on Green Go Food, "fast food with a conscience." And Publicola busts new HUDster and inveterate Twitterer Ron Sims for his faulty real estate prediction.

RSS subscription drive! Literally thousands of people follow the news on Seattlest via our Seattlest RSS feed. So come on, everyone else is doing it. Subscribe today! If RSS is too many words, you can catch headlines on our Twitter feed. We also have a mobile device site if you want to bookmark that for when you're out and about. Lastly, you can also join our Facebook group, which we use mainly to invite people to Seattlest Happy Hours. Are we missing anything? Oh, as always, if you're interested in writing for Seattlest, let us know.

We sure wish we could be at the Governor's Inaugural Ball in Olympia tonight. The next best thing is reading tweets about what everyone's wearing, obviously; thanks to Tiffany Campbell at the Seattle Times, that is an option. Sample tweet: "Just spotted 2 gals in gowns running down Capitol Way; they must be running late like me." Read the feed here, and don't forget to click on the TwitPic links for visual evidence of gorgeous gowns and fashion faux pas. This is so necessary.

Via Twitter, the House Democratic Caucus alerts us to their Capitol snow day photo break. That snow was meant for us! Stay tuned, though. You can follow first-flake reports at #seatst. Did we mention that already? Can't hurt to repeat.

  • A young man was shot in the head at the Garfield Community Center last night. Central District News has all the updates, including that two witnesses held for questioning escaped through a window.
  • Do you drive a blue Kia Sentra? Did you abandon it, double-parked on a West Seattle hill recently? If so, your neighborhood would like you to move it...like, yesterday.
  • In this faltering economy, Cap to the Hill has a great holiday present option as demonstrated by their photo-booth Tuesday entry.
