Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition Aug. 28-30

WAYZGOOSE!: We swear no geese are involved (or will be harmed) during Saturday's 8th Annual Letterpress Wayzgoose, a day to creatively honor the letterpress; expect demos, shop tours, and cool designs. Make sure not to miss the Steamroller Letterpress Smackdown! There is nothing cooler than blending the letterpress traditions of the 17th century with the 21st century techniques, design, and horsepower. You'll watch design teams create a poster and then try printing it with a two-ton steamroller, used in place of the traditional printing press.

We hadn't been to the Twilight Exit since they moved across the street to the other side of Madison. We weren't mad at them, we just had moved ourselves at the same time, and they weren't as close. But last Friday we stopped in and had some of the best fish and chips that we've ever had in Seattle -- wonderful golden brown, Guiness-battered fish and chips that leave your fingers shiny and your digestive system well-oiled. Yelpers like the joint, too. We'd been on a run of terrible gooey, breaded fish and chips that left us so nauseous it put us off our Guinness; it was good to see someone still knows how to make this essential pub dish.

We hate this loathsome holiday. And no, not for the reasons most people think. Right up there with Mother's Day, we're sick of the commercialization of relationships, of marketers trying to tug at people's unwitting ability to decide for themselves when and how to tell the people around them that they love them.

A reader asks:

I gots a question for you, Mr. Seattlest. People at work are looking for a good Karaoke venue. You heard tell of any? Friends from work want to do it Weds. night. Looking for more "hip" than unhip; more top 40/seventies/big band than modern country, etc. Everyone knows there are lots in the Int'l District, but we're not looking for a William Hung outing, to laugh at furriners. We want to have fun our own selves.

The Boston-area rap duo Big Digits will make their triumphant return to our side of the hood Saturday, nearly one year after their victorious "rap battle in Seattle" (Get it? It rhymes...) whereby their west coast rivals Cancer Rising "got served" a rap-tastic smackdown that shamed Larry Mizell into hiding. But seriously: The show Big Digits put on last May at the Lo_Fi was one of the year's best performances, particularly for the insane, indescribable dance moves of former Punk Rock Aerobics genius T.D. Sidell (see photo above), endowed with a God like kinetic energy power that would make Bruce Lee look like Richard Simmons if Lee wasn't already dead.

Sundays usually find us belting out the karaoke at The Twilight Exit, Pabst Blue Ribbon in hand   But this Sunday Seattlest is heading uptown for what’s being billed as “The Ultimate Wine and Food Event”--The Taste of Washington Showcase of Wineries and Restaurants. Seattlest is not going to waste one word nitpicking their grandiose marketing description.  After attending last year’s event, we’ve drunk the kool-aid.  (Repeat after us … “This is an epic tasting event”).  165 wineries,  90 restaurants, 3.5 hours.
