Regardless of what the weather's been doing this season, Seattleites know it must be summer when you see a retired "duck" careering down the street, packed to the brim with pirates. Oh, Seafair.
What's the Plan? Today's Torchlight Activities
Can't Miss It: The Weekend
The next few days are filled with interesting options. Maybe you'd like to hang out in the woods with walkers. Perhaps defend a square foot of asphalt for a few hours, so you can clearly see Washington's entrant for Miss America. Or instead, loiter in the streets and listen to music. Well, whatever your druthers, your plans are after the jump.
Seattle is Armed and Dangerous
The worst thing about the headline "6 injured in overnight shootings" is that it doesn't take into account a murder at a Ballard gas station. Just to recap, over this weekend, a man was shot in the leg following an argument at Second and Pine (while the Torchlight Parade was going on), two people were shot at 1 a.m. at 208th and Pacific Highway South in SeaTac, and three men were shot at about 2 a.m. at the 1200 block of Westlake Avenue North. Then at around 6:30 a.m. Sunday came the gas station robbery and homicide.
Waiting for the Torch
Leaving Belltown early in the afternoon, heading for CHBP, Seattlest was surprised to find that Fourth Avenue had been transformed into a sort of military corridor, complete with traffic cones, bleachers and hundreds of those canvas armchairs with cup-holders. Right, the Torchlight Parade! That's tonight, isn't it? But what were all those poor shlubs doing, sitting in those chairs, soft drink in hand, waiting, with the infinite patience of the out-of-towner, for the first float, the first drill team and the first convertible (topped by an oversize princess), not to materialize for five, six, seven hours?
