If Tony Bennett leaves his heart in Pullman, it'll be because an enraged Coug fan spotted him, carved it out, and stuck it on a wall as a warning. WSU basketball coach Bennett, the only man to take the perennially terrible Cougars to the NCAA tournament's Sweet 16, is now head coach at the University of Virginia. Writes the Spokane Spokesman-Review's Vince Grippi: "The players are shocked, the administration is shocked, the assistant coaches are shocked." Writes Jeff Nusser of CougCenter: "All that stuff about Tony loving Pullman and wanting to build something special? About asking the administration for seven years? Apparently, it was all a bunch of s***."

The Washington State Cougars shut down one of the most potent offenses in the Tourney and the Big East Player of the Year, Luke Harangody, to advance to the Sweet 16. This is the first time in more than 65 years that Wazzu has won two games in the NCAA Tournament--last time, they made it to the national championship game. Coach Tony Bennett motivated his players with a little pre-game reminder of what happened last year, the result: the Cougs dominated the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame from start to finish on Saturday, winning 61-41.
Tony Bennett: "I like [Sanjaya] because he dares to be different."
Florida may have won their second straight National Championship last night, however, there will be no three-pete in Gainsville. Once National Coach of the Year Tony Bennett leads his Washington Huskies back on the court in November, they might as well mail the trophy directly to Montlake.
Via All Cougs, All the Time, Wazzu's athletic dept. announces a press conference at 3:15pm today with athletic director Jim Sterk and men's b-ball head coach Tony Bennett.
Washington State 70, Oral Roberts 54: Oral Roberts was the trendy upset pick--nearly 25% of ESPN users expected Wazzu to Coug it (by comparison, less than 5% had #3-seed Oregon losing)--but our faith in Wazzu didn't waver. Though it was close at halftime, we predicted that Wazzu would play their typical strangling defense to open the second half, and they proved us right, holding O-Rob to one field goal in the first six minutes of period two. The Cougs won going away. Wazzu continued their terrific offensive efficiency, committing only six (!) turnovers. Only Bobby Knight's Texas Tech Red Raiders committed as few on the tourney's first day, which should give you some insight into how good a coach Tony Bennett is.
USA Today reveals that America's next would-be culture czar is already enthroned as (gulp) the nation's barrista baron.
A post in Tuesday's DCist mentioned a campaign in the other Washington to adopt a bland song named "Come to Washington" as an official "city anthem." Then, in a follow-up post, DCist nominated nine other, better songs. Readers voted for their favorites and suggested a few more. The current fave seems to be the Magnetic Fields' awesomely evocative "Washington, D.C."
