No Zoo Doo this spring! Woodland Park Zoo just notified us that their highly popular Fecal Fest Zoo Doo lottery--which brings that "fresh Zoo smell" to your backyards and P-Patches--has been canceled for spring because of a shortage of safely Grade-A poop. Turns out there are "unacceptable levels of the herbicide clopyralid" in the Zoo's doo--the herbicide is used on hay and wheat fields, doesn't break down easily, and now that it's stored in the animal manure, would likely wreak havoc on gardeners' pea, sunflower and tomato crops. Is that all? "In laboratory tests, clopyralid caused what a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reviewer called 'substantial' reproductive problems," says Mindfully.org. Circle of goddamn life people! Used on wheat fields, eh? What's in your poop? (Strictly a rhetorical question.)

We are dedicated to finding the perfect hot lunch in Georgetown. Top contenders thus far have been Smarty Pants' Troublemaker sandwich, a drippy cheesy mess stuffed with ungodly amounts of spicy chicken and bacon; the gouda fennel polenta at Georgetown Liquor Company, fried crisp and topped with a scrumptiously zingy and sweet apple balsamic reduction; and the perfectly crunchy, well-seasoned chicken salad sandwich at Georgetown Truck Stop, until that hut of heaven closed in fall of 2008. There's a new guy in town, though. The sourdough bacon burger at recently-opened Burger Madness, on 4th Avenue South (just north of Costco), just edged its way into our all-time favorite four hot lunches in SoDo/Georgetown.

Seattlest has been obsessed with soups lately (it's not quite cold enough for stew). Today we tucked into Than Bros. chicken pho (small, $4.75). Tuesday it was Von's Three Meat Soup (a hearty, verging-on-stew bowlful, $6.95).
