Get Out This Weekend....No, Seriously, Just Get Outside
Seattlest grew up in Central Florida and, even though we haven't lived there for many, many years, we still crave the sunshine. Maybe it's because our body expects more vitamin D? We certainly don't want to add to the choruses of imported souls who bitch and moan about Seattle winters. Nonetheless, we wind up doing so, anyway, every year around mid-January.
Get Out Tonight: Thuper Tuethday Eventh
This Seattlest will be heading to a private party tonight, where we will celebrate among our favorite people the fact that Super Tuesday is FINALLY here. But, if you're looking for somewhere more out-on-the-town to get your drink on and watch the returns trickle in, and pancakes aren't your bag, here's the guide for you. Most of these events start at 5pm, and they're all free. Go America!
John Kerry to Make "Fever Pitch" in Seattle and Tacoma Tomorrow
This Seattlest has long been a Hillary supporter, so you could imagine our surprise when we started getting seemingly random emails on behalf of the Obama campaign. We were annoyed at first, until we remembered being a leftover on the John Kerry mailinglist from 2004. Kerry, of course, announced his endorsement of Obama recently, and he won't stop emailing us about his excitement and dedication.
Home For the Holidays: Small Towns Are Full of Surprises
This Seattlest took one look at the weather forecast and headed to sunny Florida yesterday. Now here we are in our hometown of DeLand, population 24,375 (per 2006 census). Our mother doesn't have wireless at the house, and is operating off a 1997 iMac. It's cute and compact, but slow as hell, so we headed out this morning for the one source of public wifi in town: Boston Gourmet Coffeehouse.
How Fun, Exactly, Was This Forest?
This Seattlest started his carpet-bagging campaign here about ten years ago, so maybe we have an imperfect understanding of the Fun Forest and it's cultural baggage. When we heard that the City Council had elected to raze the Fun Forest in 2009 our first reaction was "What?! They're clear-cutting the Wenatchee National Forest?!" But then we caught on, as we occasionally do, and realized they were talking about the little carnivalette that lives in Seattle...
Seattlest Reviews: The Nutcracker at PNB
Until the day after Thanksgiving, Seattlest hadn't seen The Nutcracker -- probably the world's most famous ballet -- in years. But we had a solid image in our head of what it looked like because when Seattlest was a little kid, our mom made an annual birthday tradition to see it every year on opening night. For much of our childhood, this meant getting all spiffed up and walking a few blocks to Lincoln...
Snowcap Recap: The Dandy Warhols @ Get Snowed In
, and though we didn't exactly rush out and buy his record, it was a good scene.
GABF - The Final Frontier of Beer Festivals
So, you think you have been to a beer festival before? Maybe you went to Fremont Oktoberfest , or maybe you even went to the Seattle International Beer Fest this summer. If you really want to go to a beer festival, get yourself to Denver in 10 days.
Tiger, Tiger...Snowing in April?
This past Saturday marked the opening of Tiger Mountain to biking for the spring, an event that typically draws an unusually large crowd to the east side of this favorite local spot. We skip it every year. Seattlest prefers our local mountain biking a bit less crowded, though the social aspect is enjoyable. Reports came in that the parking lot was a zoo, but mostly due to people showing up, assessing the dumping rain, and turning around to leave.
NY Times Wonders About Wonder Bread Sign
Seattlest had avoided reading our favorite national papers over the past few days because we feared what stupid conclusions they might reach about Saturday's shootings, especially since the stupidity was so present from the beginning with our own damn local papers. However, the New York Times, of all places, instead recently printed a short article wondering what we're going to do with our homeless Wonder Bread sign, now that the property is slated for Nickel's-style urban assault development.
Quit Smoking, Get Devoured by Giant Eagle
At least one Seattlest contributor quit smoking over ten years ago not just for the obvious health reasons but also because of all the really creepy stuff that went down between the tobacco companies and the media; Michael Mann would go on to make a little movie about it five years later, which would effectively capture said creepiness of the aforementioned tobacco/corporate media weirdness.
Area Beaches
The last few days have been overcast haze, and the forecast doesn't look much better. But summer hit Seattle a week ago, with temperatures into the high 80s. So it is about time to dust off the swimsuit and get ready to head down to your local Seattle Parks beach. You can check the bacterial count and the temperature before you go at the King County Beach monitoring website. Signs should be posted if there is some public health reason to close the beach. This Seattlest has been swimming in area lakes including Lake Union for years without getting ill or developing "Swimmer's Itch" (which is apparently due to the Canada geese). King County also makes available not so "real time" data collected at various water quality and weather buoys and even a narrative story about Lake Washington.
