SO WONDERFUL: Taproot Theatre Company is putting on It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play tonight at North Seattle Community College. It's a Wonderful Life was first originally broadcasted on the radio in 1947, though most of us have only had the pleasure of watching it on VHS. If you're in need of some warm and fuzzy goodness and a little extra holiday cheer, here is the event for you. Great for the family, and for those who want to see a live version of this all-time holiday classic.
Can't Miss It: Tuesday
Forced Time Off In '09 For King County Employees
In support and sincere sympathy for all the King County employees who will be forced to take an extra week and a half off without pay next year, Seattlest has compiled a short list of our favorite "playing hooky" activities around town--a menu of action items, if you will, for the victims of budget cuts to consider on their extra time off. Thus far, we have: people-watch at Pike Place Market, read for a few hours at the Central Library, see the latest trashy movie, order Thai food and sit at home watching The Wire for five hours, take the bus to Golden Gardens and contemplate bird poop. Suggestions?
Port Managers Resign Over Accusations Of Fraud
Larry McFadden and John Rothnie, managers at the Port of Seattle, have resigned from their positions after a special investigation into the Port's activities found ten provable instances of fraud. According to the P-I's sources, Port CEO Tay Yoshitani had planned to fire the two men as part of his disciplinary response to the investigation's findings, but they chose to leave under their own will before Yoshitani could announce his intentions.
Neighborhood News Roundup
- The Slog, with the help of the McLeod Residence, is debating if grilled cheese will be what brings foodies around to American cheese. The McLeods assert that American cheese is the unquestionable king of grilled cheese--we're not so sure. Sure, American cheese melts like plastic, but we've always actually found that a bit telling. Give us Tillamook sharp cheddar any day of the week.
- The Kirkland Weblog complains that an outbreak of local graffiti is making Kirkland look like something straight out of The Wire. We highly doubt that. Highly. In reality, Kirkland looks a bit more like Agrestic from Weeds, if we're going for cable show comparisons.
- Capitol Hill Seattle is feeling a wee bit concerned about the increased number of both abandonded buildings and panhandlers on Broadway.
Seattlest Caucusest
We here at Seattlest really wanted to go out and caucus on Saturday, however, HBO is showing Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. So we made some calls, and the DNC gave us permission to hold a special caucus today. They even threw in a couple delegates that Utah wasn’t going to use:
Stalk of the Town: Jan. 11-13, 2008
This weekend's highlight for Geoff will be a Brewer's Dinner at The Collins Pub held by Hair of the Dog Brewery from Portland. 6 courses paired with 6 beers, plus a few special releases to boot. As a Bears and now semi-Seahawks fan, he'll be hoping that Brett Favre breaks a hip during Saturday's Seahawks game at Lambeau Field.
Lunatic Fringe
Corner of 3rd and Union last night, the air's full of crazies. The rabid anti-Hillary crazies, fueled by and fueling right-wing panic even as they convince the mainstream that she's unelectable because she's so polarizing ("Just look at us!"). The Ron Paul crazies, all suited and tied. The 9/11 crazies in search of evil conspiracies.

Stealing the Dial Tone in West Seattle
It was said on this site not too long ago that copper theft was Seattlest's favorite modern crime. Something about raw materials theft and the sheer weight of the score tips the scales in its favor over identity theft which is exactly the opposite end of the virtual spectrum and our second favorite crime. Ain't nothing virtual about the 15,000 feet of copper wire that was taken from a road construction project in Washington last week. Construction sites, however, are strictly amateur as copper heists go. The real challenge is in live wire. One minute you're on the phone to whoever complaining about whatever and the next... That bitch did not just hang up on me. No, but that bitch did just run off with your copper wire. In Delridge over the weekend Qwest was a little slow in getting to a downed pole and the copper guys got there first leaving some 200 West Seattle residents without phone service for a day while the wire was replaced.
Miss Witherspoon Weathers the Netherworld
Act Theatre's latest offering, Miss Witherspoon by Christopher Durang, is the perfect balance to their previous effort, The Pillowman. Both plays feature crucifixion talk and an impending sense of doom, but Witherspoon contains an unlikely amount of hope to counterbalance Pillowman's bleak outlook.
I Curate Rummage
Shopping frenzy time, everyone. Unless you're going the starving artist route and giving your loved ones experiences for Christmas you're getting down to the wire in terms of Shopping Days Left Till. With that in mind let us frame this weekened's I <3 Rummage as the perfect opportunity to not only support local crafters, designers and artists, but also to let your family know exactly what kind of gifts you'll be expecting in return next year.
News From the World of Drugs (Formerly the World of Sports)
One day after legendary hitter Rafael Palmiero was suspended for steroid use, ESPN reports this morning that Mariners starting pitcher Ryan Franklin is suspended 10 days for the same thing.
