STRONG, WILY OL'D MAN: My! Oldominion, a legendary and superdope Northwest hiphop collective boasting members who happen to be some of our area's strongest and most creative artists, certainly has aged well. The group turns ten years old this year, and to celebrate, they're throwing a family reunion/party/show combo at Neumos this weekend. On the bill: The Saturday Knights, Grayskul, and assorted extremely important members of the crew. We're just saying, Oldominion knows how to party.
Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, Jan. 30-Feb. 1
Stalk of the Town: New Year's Eve Edition
MvB can't decide if he's heading out early or late, but at some point he'll be at Uber Tavern drinking an assortment of "very rare" beers and snacking on Swedish meatballs.

Tonight, she'll be reading from the book and providing folks with snacks and drinks, prizes, and an opportunity to network will fellow freelancers. Get thee to Office Nomads for the party/reading.
A Local We're Totes Crushing On
We are totes crushing on Tilson from The Saturday Knights, and if you watch this video from the most recent Songs For Eating And Drinking, you'll see why. Not only is he plain ol' attractive, but he is a really, really good (genius-level) rapper; his freestyles are mesmerizing. He's been in the biz but not of the biz for a long time now, and we know he'll stay that way--just out of reach of all the bullshit, with a lyrical hand extended back to the rest of us in case we want to leave it behind too. Woof....We think he's cute!
The Saturday Knights Save Sunday Night
Hip hop's The Saturday Knights are a Seattle band and proud of it, from Tilson's Sonics cap to the samples from the Fleet Foxes' "White Winter Hymal" and Band of Horses' car commercial. We weren't really dying to hear anything on Sunday night except TSK's Tilson, Barfly, and DJ Suspence, and they lived up to our expectations. New to us was Tilson's elegy for Isaac Hayes, sung over a sample from the theme to Shaft. It's hard to stay in focus, we learned, when you're helplessly dancing and singing along. Also that Tilson is a hyperkinetic son of a bitch.
Mingle Freely
That is, get Mingle, The Saturday Knights' latest all-star party album that is blowing everyone's minds in the music world and beyond, for free right now. Go to music blog Seattle Subsonic for the download link, and do it now, because soon Seattlest's favorite hiphop/rock/?!! album of the year will cost you money again! Our favorite tracks: "Dog Star," "Private School Girl," and "Nobody Beats Us." But we could have said any three tracks, really, because the entire cd rocks our face off.
Capitol Hill Block Party: Saturday!
Ahh, Saturday! A chronologically arranged discussion of the Block Party, Day Zwei (Day Eins here):
Donut-Eating Competition On Saturday
Yes, you read that correctly. Donut! Eating! Competition! Are your artery walls closing in yet? Don't worry, because all calories from the donut consumption on Saturday will be null-and-voided by the blast of hiphoppy surfer punk rock played live by The Saturday Knights while you cram your mouth full of cakey, frosted goodness at the downtown Top Pot on (appropriately) Saturday. Last year, Bob of The Blakes won; this year, our money's on a very special someone named Billy The Fridge.
The Saturday Knights Owned Friday Night At Nectar
The Saturday Knights/Budos Band show at Nectar on Friday night was sold out by 9:30 p.m., as in guest lists closed, no further entrance, and crowds of people partying outside the gates. Seattlest arrived at a normally respectable hour of 10:45 p.m. to find the Budos Band's shiny brass horns blaring, congo drums thumping, and every inch of Nectar packed with happy people.
Seattle to Austin
Seattlest is quaking in their boots (bought especially for the occasion) with excitement for this years SXSW in Austin, Tex. We're making our initial sojourn to the festival and are so pleased to see there will be a strong Seattle contingent joining us in Austin this year.
We Review The Program: Day Three
. We admit it: actually being at an event rocks at least ten times harder than watching it streamed online, no matter how good the audio/video feed is and no matter how much you love the internet. Day Three of The Program involved Seattlest physically putting our hands in the air and side to side (Grynch said to!), and even doing some headbanging to The Saturday Knights. Yes, we did spend physical, non-internet money on Day Three, but we also got to experience Grynch, Khingz (and co.), and TSK in physical, non-internet person. We jogged home during the break between TSK and Blue Scholars... Maybe we'll stay on Day Four.
Winners and Stinkers of the Block Party [Friday]
Seattlest arrived on scene soon after the Capitol Hill Block Party had opened. We wandered, checked out the stage locations and thought about getting a beer, then spotted a booth touting free bottled water. It looked like the booth had something to do with praying to the Earth Spirits or some other new wave white hippy crap, but we decided to take our chances. We asked for a water and oddly enough their were no questions asked of Seattlest, no "Is your spirit at peace with the world?" or "Do you ever cry for Mother Nature?" We did, however, get thoroughly eye-fucked by our water purveyor. We told him thank you, took a mental bath and off we went to hear some music. (And before you reactionaries out there start accusing us of homophobia, get over yourselves. We're not talking about getting "checked out." We're talking about a look that said, Right now, in my mind, I'm eating spaghetti off of your chest.)
Get Out Saturday: Doughnut Eating Contest (with the Saturday Knights)
It's been a while since Seattlest extolled the virtue of our hero, Takeru Kobayashi or his sport, competitive eating. Sure, his hot dog eating record was beaten a few weeks back, but he's still our hero, and we still admire his fitness in the face of his professional gluttony.
Aural Pleasures (9/19 - 9/25)
Now that there's a chill in the air, Seattlest has taken to closing our windows at night before curling up in a warm bed with some hot cocoa and earplugs. That's right, it's officially the fall tour season, and there's live music galore. Behold!
The Week's Picks...
Another week of Seattlest making all your plans for you. You don’t even have to think! Joy!
