HOLIDAYS AT THE ZOO: Even the animals at the Woodland Park Zoo are getting into the holiday spirit. For the next three days of the zoo's Winter Celebration, zookeepers will bring the animals gifts of tasty treats like "wreaths trimmed with fish or assorted fruit, evergreen trees with ornamental fruit, or wrapped boxes filled with favorite tidbits." For today, the schedule of feedings is sun bears at 11 a.m., grizzlies and pigs at noon, and the elephants at 2 p.m. Tomorrow, the orangutans, otters, golden lion tamarins, and tigers get theirs, and Wednesday closes things out with the emus, gorillas, and Australian birds and keas.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the end of Prohibition via the 21st Amendment, a.k.a. Repeal Day. It's hard to fathom that for thirteen sad, dark years (1920 to 1933), our fine country was dry (or at least, legally so). Considering earlier this week was also the 75th anniversary of the bloody mary, there's twice as much to celebrate this year.

Even if you're going to tonight's John in the Morning at Night, Friday's best bet is DJ/blue-eyed soul man/gold lamé bathrobe-wearer/consummate performer Jamie Lidell, along with opener Janelle Monae at Showbox. Jamie also has an instore at Easy Street Queen Anne this evening at 6:30 p.m.

This weekend there are a lot of shows that we recommend you avoid, not that you're going to listen to Seattlest and tear up your tickets or anything, but if you previously had no idea these were happening this weekend you can pat yourself on the back for successfully avoiding any mention of them so far. First Fishbone is playing Studio 7. Stay away. Second, Jello Biafra is in town. Not there's anything wrong with Jello, exactly. Let's just say he draws a particular crowd. Finally, the Gypsy Kings are at the Paramount.

You still have to get to the Rendezvous Sunday evening for this show.

Local FBI (that's Fantagraphics Books Inc) leader Gary Groth will read excerpts of the Nixon tapes Saturday night at the Rendezvous' Jewel Box Theater in Belltown, as part of the travelling theater series Verbatim Verboten. The premise of the series is an interesting one: word-for-word (hence the "verbatim" title) interview transcripts with famous people who thought they were speaking off the record.

A group from the Pindeldyboz syndicate will be delighting the crowd at The Rendezvous with their witty writings Sunday and you should go because Sean Carman, Shya Scanlon, Louisa Peck, Jami Attenberg, Ryan Boudinot, Whitney Pastorek and Sarah M. Balcomb are all easily findable on the internet.
