Robert Bresson, Luis Buñuel, Jean-Luc Godard, Jules Dassin, Federico Fellini -- thanks to distributor Rialto Pictures, their restored films are popping up in theaters around the country, and, happily, here in Seattle.

Dann singe ich ein Lied fuer Dich / Von 99 Luftballons
We did not see this one coming. Despite the fact that we were watching a rerun of Scrubs the other night where J.D. has a little fantasy about singing "99 Luftballons" as a way of getting through to a German patient -- which in retrospect can only be considered the most blatant warning the universe could give us -- we still had no idea that the mysterious "retail company" said to be replacing the Rainbow Grocery on 15th Ave was in fact The Red Balloon Company. If you don't know, The Red Balloon Company sells balloon products. They deliver things like balloon bouquets. To our knowledge, however, their balloons are neither organic nor edible, so it's quite a change-up from the previous tenant. To quote speed-texting-tipper Andrew: "wtf?" Thanks for the photo, Bosco! We owe you the usual Hoegaarden.
Mad Max Beyond 520
While those of us in central Seattle enjoyed a three-day weekend, 234,000 people, mostly on the Eastside, are looking at their fifth night without power, and PSE's telling some of them--mostly in eastern King County (Duvall, North Bend, etc...)--that they won't be back on the grid for days.
Aural Pleasures (11/21 - 11/27)
Not a huge week in music, but hey, it's a holiday. Stay home and eat! Then put your sweatpants on!
"Tough, but Fair" -- The August 1 Trivia Wrap-Up
Tuesday night, Seattlest decided to ratchet up the difficulty level on the quiz at the Old Pequilar. And we think that worked well. We heard bitching, but it was good, brain-smacking bitching, not lynch-the-quiz-host bitching.
Redbull Gives Seattle Wings
In another case of The Man doing something right, Red Bull has invaded Seattle, not to actively sell their overly-caffeinated wares, but to educate and showcase a crop of truly worldwide talent. Seattle is lucky enough to join such cities as Berlin, Dublin, Sao Paolo, and Cape Town as this year's host city for the Red Bull Music Academy, a five week program that brings a truly international mix of beat-enthusiasts together to learn about the historical, technical, and networking aspects of the music industry.
