Last month, The Pixies announced a tour celebrating the 20th (!) anniversary of still-awesome album Doolittle. Today, they announced the North American cities on said fall tour, and Seattle made the cut. No date or venue mentioned yet, to which we say: please two nights at the (real) Showbox or the Paramount. We love you, Pixies, and we lurrrrrve that album, but not enough to see you at the SoDo or Key Arena.
Evidently, the vocoder will not have its vengeance until it has reconquered all of pop music.
SIFF runs a tight ship. Even though their Face the Music party at Neumo's last night had a bajillion bands on the bill---all of whom were doing ~20 minute sets chockful of covers, as a tribute to musicians featured in films at the festival--- somehow they were actually running ahead of schedule. How often does that happen at a regular rock show, let alone one with eleven musical acts? Somebody must've been cracking the whip. Truly, this slavedriver should be commended.
The final full week of SIFF is upon us. It's time to get some last few films before the sun sets on this year's fest. This week's got a couple great music events as well: Friday night, Portastatic will be on hand to perform a specially-commissioned live score accompanying circus freakshow-themed silent film The Unknown (more about that in a few days).
As a wise man once said: "Ohhhh, we're half-way there / Ohhh-oh, living on a prayer." On Wednesday, SIFF officially reached the half-way mark. But it's by no means all downhill from here. There's still tons more great films to see before the fest is through.
Forget hot vs. not, flight vs. invisibility, and left hand vs. right hand. We've settled a far more epochal question: which beloved local pastry institution is better, Top Pot or Cupcake Royale?
There is no show we recommend more this week than the British Sea Power's Wednesday night gig at Neumo's. They are one of our favorite new bands. Their 2003 CD, 'The Decline of British Sea Power' has pretty much been in solid < product placement>iPod rotation since we first got it. While they are often compared to Joy Division (or Interpol for the younger set), we like to think of them as a British version of the Decemberists only with more rock and cuter accents (sorry, Decemberists, your accents are very cute too). They are one of the best live bands on the current indie scene and should not be missed.
