We haven't read a ton of military history, but we've read enough to know that the most grievous mistakes by battle commanders aren't those that lead to defeat, but those that are made in the wake of victory. The biggest mistakes are by commanders who, having driven their opposition into full retreat, fail to press the advantage, chase the retreaters down, and destroy them. To cite just one example, had Confederate General P.G.T Beauregard ordered......

The Husky athletic department is doing great work--they've figured out how to televise tomorrow's Husky/Arizona game. No, it won't be on TV, but if you go to Hec Ed they will be showing the Arizona stadium feed there, mixed in with the Husky radio broadcast. Doors will open at 6pm, the game's at 7pm. There will be concessions for sale, but admission is free! The game can't be on TV because Fox is showing one......

The Husky secondary allowed 323 passing yards to San Jose St. in Saturday's win. The Spartans completed 80% of their passes. Yes, 80%. You might not complete that high a percentage in practice. Why even have a defense? Post-game, excuses came fast and furious. Coach Tyrone Willingham: "It is difficult to shut down everything in [the passing game]." (also, apparently, to shut down anything) Def. Coordinator Kent Baer: "I think some guys got a......

Sunday afternoon the Washington Huskies basketball team acted like they had been there before. CBS cameras captured the team politely reacting to the announcement that they had made the NCAA Tournament as a five seed. Two years ago there was much excitement after the team rallied from a 0-5 start in conference play to make the field of 65. Last year everyone went, understandably, bat-shit insane when it was announced that the Huskies had captured......

Rainier Beach, Seattlest's favorite high school hoops team, got upset in the state quarterfinals last night, by Lynden High. But, really, what chance did they stand against a team that has players with names like Dirk Dallas and Brady Bomber. Dallas had 19 points, Bomber had 15. Is this a high school basketball team or a 30's detective novel? The Seahawks released two defensive starters and a no-name, possibly to free up the money they'll......

In a clear case of East Coast bias among national basketball writers, the University of Washington did not acheive top 25 status in the latest AP women's basketball poll, despite having beaten #23 Utah and #14 Stanford. In a clear case of West Coast bias among national basketball writers, the University of Washington moved up to #7 in the AP men's basketball poll, with Gonzaga hot on their heels at #8, and UCLA at #11.......

National Champs!: The UW women's volleyball team swept favored Nebraska three games to none in the NCAA Championship game. The Huskies didn't lose a game the entire tournament--becoming only the second team to achieve that feat. First-round bye: The Seahawks survived a revitalized Steve McNair and came back to beat Tennessee 28-24, securing the franchise's first-ever first-round bye in the NFL playoffs. The Hawks can clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with one win in......

The Huskies beat #6 Gonzaga last night, ending a seven-game losing streak to the Zags and proving that, despite losing three top scorers from last year, this year's Husky team is worthy of national attention. No thanks to the Husky student section, however. The rabid students, some of whom camped out for two days to get tickets to this in-state rivalry, chanted "take a shower" and "shave your moustache" at Gonzaga's funny-looking junior forward Adam......

Pac-10 Coach of the Year Jim McLaughlin and Pac-10 Player of the Year Sonja Tomasevic will lead the Husky women's volleyball team this weekend in Fort Collins, Co., where the Dawgs start the NCAA tournament as the top seed in the West Regional. The Huskies (26-1) meet Siena (20-11) Friday night in the first round of the 64-team tournament. Last year, Washington made the Final Four, but lost to eventual champion Stanford. This year's Final......

The Husky football team, helped by a Hail Mary touchdown pass to end the second half, became the first state school to win a Pac-10 game this season, beating Arizona 38-14. The Dawgs host the Apple Cup next Saturday. The Seahawks put a death lock on the NFC West, beating division rival St. Louis for the second time this season. Shawn Alexander scored three touchdowns, the last capping a five-and-a-half minute fourth quarter drive that......

March Madness isn't just the NCAA men's tournament, though Seattlest knows they've trademarked the name. At the risk of a lawsuit, we apply it to the hundreds of loser-out basketball tournaments taking place all over the country, from the South Dakota state "A" championship to the public school championships in New York City. Local teams began tournament life last weekend with the Pac-10 Women's basketball tournament and the State 3A Boys and Girls Tournaments.......
