Go West!: Cars, Bikes, Cars vs. Bikes, and Settlers of Catan

A lot of buildings in West Seattle have been catching fire lately. Cars and bikes are having disagreements. Local sewer systems may be getting an upgrade. West Seattle, if that's not exciting enough for you, this weekend also ushers in a new "strategy board game group." Start time: 1 p.m. End time: UNSPECIFIED (much like Settlers of Catan that way). more ›

School District Audit Uncovers Sticky Fingers Problem

During a recent state audit of the public school system, a riding lawn mower, laptop computers, overhead projectors, and a costly spool of copper wire were just a few of the items suspiciously missing from the inventory of the Seattle School District. The cost of the small electronics missing alone totaled up to $118,911 in taxpayer money gone and unaccounted for. Well, the unaccounted part was only recently uncovered, when the audit revealed--despite four previous reminders--that the Seattle School District once again failed to report the suspected or known losses and vandalism. more ›

Runaway Shopping Carts Plague Bellevue Streets

Runaway Shopping Carts Plague Bellevue Streets

The City of Bellevue and local residents have had it with the excessive amount of retailers' shopping carts strewn across city bus stops, streets, vacant parking lots, and don't even get them started about the dizz-asterous collection found at Crossroads Shopping Center. While some retailers do attempt to corral the runaways, other shrug their shoulders without the means or capabilities to collect the transient shopping carts. more ›

Seattlest Poll: Is the SPD Soft on Crime?

This morning's story about Wallingford car prowls going unpoliced isn't the first time we've heard the Seattle blogosphere making noise about lack of SPD follow-up for smaller crimes. West Seattle has car prowlers, so does the U District and Central District. In contrast, SPD says car prowls on Capitol Hill are down 50 percent. more ›

Give the Bunny Costume Back Right Now

Give the Bunny Costume Back Right Now

Circus Contraption's resident stuntman and drummer, Bunny LaMonte, had his costume stolen from the TK Artists Lofts' laundry room yesterday. It was designed and built from scratch for "The SHOW to End All SHOWS," which goes up at 8 p.m. tonight and runs through May. "Boy, do we need that costume. It will really be embarrassing if the Bunny is in his underwear in front of the 160 or so people who have already purchased tickets for tonight," says Erin. "I will offer two comps and two free drink tickets to any show for information leading to the return of the Bunny Suit. No questions asked." more ›

Hold On To Your Specs

There's an eyeglasses fetishist loose on Capitol Hill! Seattle 911 alerts us that a witness to Saturday night's eyeglasses theft at Neighbours says the suspect has stolen nine pairs of cheaters before. Nine coke-bottles taken does not a fetish make, so we're not sure where that part of Seattle 911's article came from, but it's a funny picture: some white, 140 lb. man with bleached hair sitting on the floor at home, surrounded by nine pairs of trendy-framed spectacles, increasingly excited by the idea that nine people are now more blind than they were before he snatched their goggles. Some therapist is gonna love that one. more ›

Amanda Knox is teary-eyed after her first day of testimony, and here in Seattle, we're a little worse for wear as well. Richard Branson blasted Boeing and threatened to take his bidness elsewhere. Jim, Some Burglars Are Looking For You

Former Seattlester Courtney alerted us to a weekend burglary in Jackson Place, at 20th and Charles in the Central District, with a twist: the burglars are suspected to be young kids who will knock first to see if anyone's home. According to the Jackson Place Community Council email group, a couple "carefully dressed" young teens were knocking on doors in that area in the early afternoon on the day of the burglary and, if someone answered the door, asking for "Jim." Note to "Jim": can you get in touch with these kids so they can stop stealing laptops from unoccupied houses in the Central? more ›

See Me Now? I've Got a Flag!

See Me Now? I've Got a Flag!

The other day on a walk up 40th in Wallingford, we noticed that the crossing flags at 40th and Sunnyside were in search of an adopter. There was a little sign up next to the flag bucket that we took a picture of, but, you know, cameraphone at night...it's not that visible. It said something like, "Adopt this intersection--email CrossingFlags@gmail.com." We emailed to determine what, exactly, adopting crossing flags entailed--because the flags in Wallingford are starting to mature and we're not prepared for the teen years--and it turns out you just buy new flags ($1.62 a pop) every once in a while to replace the flags lost to attrition (or attempt to get the city to put flags there, although that way madness lies). more ›

Jose Blanco In Custody After Confessing To Murder

Late last night, the Rainier Valley Post reported that Jose "Angel" Blanco finally returned from Mexico to give himself up to authorities. He had fled south after being charged with murder in the first degree of his ex-wife Noemi Lopez, discovered on November 30th by her children to be dead in her home from 60 stab wounds. Blanco confessed via text message to his daughter on the day of the murder, but immediately went on the run from the police; according to the Times, he is also suspected of theft to the tune of $5,000 from the airport pay phone company where he worked in order to finance his trip to Mexico. more ›

When officers tried to pull the truck over, the driver gunned it, leading officers on a brief chase. The suspect was eventually stopped by police maneuvers and was arrested.
