It's a Weird Thing to Do Anything Again

Yo La Tengo's current "Freewheeling Tour" is billed as one where "anything can and will happen." Reports from earlier stops informed us to expect the unexpected in a setting that is more "mass hangout than veritable rock show," that we could ask questions and should look for the band to play songs based on those questions. Even so, we weren't sure what to expect. We weren't sure if we'd like the format or if it would detract from the music. And we love Yo La Tengo. more ›

Get Out Tuesday: Yo La Tengo

It's not often the Seattlest feels the need to research a show before we go to see it, but Yo La Tengo's current tour has a really fascinating description: more ›

Best in Show

Best in Show

It's been forever since we've heard from local sketch comedy troupe Train of Thought. Alright, so it hasn't even been a month since they kicked off their participation in JibJab's Great Sketch Experiment (you can still vote on that for another week here), and they're already performing again at the Northwest Actor's Studio. While their new show is overall middling, it's peppered with moments of sheer brilliance. more ›

Aural Pleasures

Aural Pleasures

Seattlest doesn't find this picture funny at all. We know firsthand how hard those awkward years of high school can be. The pimples, the pants that didn't fit right, the God-awful hours spent wishing Heather Cannon would think of us as more than that creepy guy staring at her. If you think this picture is funny, well, you're a bad person. more ›

Arbitron Puts KOMO Over KIRO, But So What

Seattlest's radio only has two buttons; one for KUOW and one for KEXP, and we only use those when our iPod's battery gives up the ghost 2 minutes into a drive. Or if Moe's on. more ›

An Occasion for Ass-Shakin'

An Occasion for Ass-Shakin'

It'd be nice to be able to say that the electronic music scene is able to avoid the trappings of the Seattle hipsteritis. You'd think that when most of your product is meant for dancing, that that's what a crowd will do. Hardly. Even with a healthy crowd, it takes a lot of time (and liquid courage) to get a crowd worked up, and that's usually "worked up" by Seattle standards, which implies a lot of people standing around on the dancefloor, drinks in hand. Occasionally a show will be able to transcend that, but those are pretty hard to predict. That said, based on past history, DJ Minx should be able to get the people movin'. more ›

Everybody Else Is Reading It, So Why Don't We?

Everybody Else Is Reading It, So Why Don't We?

Remember If All of Seattle Read the Same Book, the Seattle Public Library-sponsored event wherein, as you might guess, all of Seattle was encouraged to read the same book? (At the same time, no less.) more ›

When Good Ideas Go Bad

When Good Ideas Go Bad

Seattlest debated on whether to write this post at all. We don't want to come across as negative (not that that slows us down at all in the real world). Never mind those reservations however. Despite the fact that the exhibit itself is winding down for us, we feel its our duty to let our thoughts be known. Our words may come too late for Seattle, but maybe it can help out our friends in Austin. more ›
