The Other Old Rainier Brewery
Architecture writer Lawrence Cheek writes in today's P-I about two historic properties--one landmarked and one not, respectively--that have been undergoing some creative adaptive reuses: Queen Anne High School and the old Rainier (Sick's) Brewery in SoDo. We were fortunate enough to take a tour of the latter earlier this month.
Sticker Street Art That We Can Love Again
Our disillusionment with Spacecraft last year left us with flagging enthusiasm to look at street stickers. Far too many guerilla marketers, it seemed, were hawking their shit with cheap, mass-produced, vinyl stickers. It was enough to cause our eyes and mind to turn down the volume on sticker art.
Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
Londonist are starting to think their city is getting just a little bit too expensive, when even Christian Slater can't afford to go out there. And there's no escaping, as local singer Lily Allen discovered when she was barred entry to the US. The British mapping agency caused further bad karma, by blocking a 3-D representation of London in Google Earth. But the smiles returned to Londonist's faces as they interviewed Baroness von Reichardt, who has completely covered her house in mosaic tiles.
Elsewhere In The Ist-a-verse
As the world holds it's breath, teetering precariously on the cusp of the Super Bowl (well, at least in America), the wheels of the -ists keep on turning.
Give Good Gift: The Run Up DVD
This is a gift for our would-be Portlandist readers. Upper Playground earlier this year teamed up with gallery Fifty24SF to compile a DVD introducing the world to a variety of urban contemporary artists. The Run Up profiles 27 of today's hottest artists, with heavy leanings on traditional street art (think graffiti), but incorporating other disciplines as well. We realize that we mention our love for Seattle's home for urban contemporary art BLVD on a pretty regular basis, and this DVD is a good primer to that particular segment of the art world. Hell, even the trailers are awesome.
Seattle Should Lose Buildings To Developers NYC-style
This past weekend Seattlest visited Gothamist's stomping grounds. We were there for the farewell shows of Rainer Maria, but had our days free to see the sights and take in the New York experience. We stumbled upon a once-in-a-lifetime event in the world of street art, and amazing as it was, we couldn't help but to be struck by what lessons it could have for Seattle.
Films at an Art Gallery? What'll They Think of Next?
BLVD is adding another art form to its repertoire: film. This Friday night, they're kicking off the Uniplex film series:
An evening of films by, about, and featuring the best of the Urban Contemporary art movement. Uniplex is an effort to bring a greater understanding to the general public of what has become the most influential global art movement of the 21st century, Urban/Street art . The first installment in the series features two short films, Fish Tales and Barnstormers 360, and the feature film Quality of Life.Quality of Life is about two legendary graffiti artists from San Francisco's Mission District. "Barnstormers 360" is a time-lapse film documenting the disassembly, reassembly, and painting of a 1930s tobacco barn. And "Fish Tales" is about a quest for a skateable fish, something so cool that even Urban Dictionary can't help us decode what it is.
A Kinder, Gentler Vandalism
During our carefree days as hapless grad students a couple of years back, we noticed a surge of knitting among the student set. While discussing greasy topics like intellectual freedom, ethnographic methodologies, and how best to catalog pornography, some of our number were simultaneously manipulating dangerous needles and fearsome quantities of yarn. We never formulated an official opinion whether knitting during class was disrespectful or not. On the other hand, we felt much safer sitting in a room full of pointy weaponry. Had the anti-intellectuals finally decided to storm in and shut down our abstract fantasy-land, we were prepared.
Seattle Street Art Group
A new Flickr group has been created under the long and inclusive name "Seattle Streetart / Graffiti / Stickers / Posters." The group is understandably a bit young and thin but already contains some great shots from around Seattle.
Viral Marketing Gets Cured
Seattlest did not have a camera handy when we came upon this this morning--and besides, we wouldn't have been able to hold a camera steady for the giggles.
