This Friday, Mercer Island's little league sluggers will be playing in the first round of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. As the current Northwest Region champions, they will be batting against the Mid-Atlantic champions, South Shore National from Staten Island, New York.

It was a week of bizarre, embarassing headlines at DCist. The trial of the local administrative law judge who sued his cleaners for $54 million over a pair of missing pants left everyone shaking their heads. Then the capital city was nearly brought to its knees, twice, by poop. Finally D.C. contemplated taking Vermont's place as a state and marveled at the GOP lessons learned from the "Macaca Moment."

After starting out our night at The Thermals (a show that gave us exactly what we were hoping for, in terms of band and crowd energy), we stopped by Neumo's to catch The Budos Band, a Staten Island-based afro/funk/psych/soul eleven-piece outfit. Having just spent an hour sweatily jumping around at the edge of a minor league mosh pit, the scene at Neumo's was a bit of a tectonic shift. The crowd was laid back (let's just say that nag champa would not have been out of line on this occasion), there was plenty of room for dancing, and the music was groovin' and chill.

The New York Times reports this morning that we may or may not have six more weeks of winter.
