Breaking news from the Seattle International Film Festival: Spike Lee will be the recipient of the Golden Space Needle Award for lifetime achievement at this year's SIFF. On May 23, SIFF regales lucky ticket holders with a Q&A with the legendary director, followed by a screening of his new movie, , an adaptation of the stage musical, at the Egyptian. And if you're lucky, you can score tickets (onsale at siff.net later this month) to a special dinner with Lee as guest of honor. Also on the bill this year are Francis Ford Coppola (who knew he's still working?) and Vincent Gallo, of legendary blow-job movie and the power to curse critics.

CIRCUS: Cirque Dreams presents a "Jungle Fantasy," which has nothing to do with Spike Lee. Aerialists, contortionists, vine-swinging characters, strong men and balancers perform in this touring production featuring "special effects, inventive choreography, puppeteering, and dazzling costumes." If you saw Cirque Ingenieux the last century, it's like that, sort of Soleil-lite: a Euro-flavored, theatrical setting for performers much more flexible and coordinated than you've ever dreamed a human being could be. It's "big-top spectacle" that's fun for the "whole family." [See video and photos here.]

Providing yet more evidence why you should avoid documentaries with far more than a 35-millimeter pole, the producer of Iraq in Fragments today released a gag-inducing "open letter" to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences calling on them to apologize because someone made a joke he didn't like.

POLITICS: Young Republicans meetup. "Can't be any more boring than Drinking Liberally, can it?" asks Seattlest Seth. "Six of one, half dozen of the other," we reply.

AIR SUPPLY: Eric Klinenberg’s new book, Fighting for Air, examines how corporate ownership and control of local media has remade American political and cultural life. Klinenberg, a sociology professor at New York University, is interviewed by Michael Fancher, Seattle Times editor-at-large.

Last week we toughed it out through the chilly night and made our way to the Crocodile to see The Joggers, hailing from Portland. While it filled out over the course of the evening, Seattlest was still one of few willing to brave the elements, leaving much of Seattle to miss what was a very good show, highlighted by the hijinks of a few intoxicated audience members.
