Since 1998 the Pacific Northwest Ballet’s DISCOVER DANCE program has been bringing dance education to students in Eastside and Seattle area schools. Fun activities like field trips to the PNB costume shop and rehearsal studios are just the beginning. These students are given the opportunity to work with PNB Teaching Artists to create their own original choreography that they can perform for the public. Even the backdrops have been designed by students in the program.
PNB Presents DISCOVER DANCE
PNB's The Sleeping Beauty Enchants McCaw Hall
It was admittedly with some reservation that we headed to the PNB opening night performance of The Sleeping Beauty last week. We love classical ballet, but we’ve seen the boundary-pushing, über-engaging side of PNB and its offsets, and the full-length storybook ballets are usually classically vanilla, plumped with pomp and circumstance, and several hours long.
Spectrum Dance Kicks the Fun Up a Notch
The choreographic genius of Spectrum's Donald Byrd makes God-fearing folk swear and the irreligious cry, "Oh my god!" Partly that's because his dancers present as solid, sweating people, rather than mysteriously gesturing messengers. He consistently brings ideas back to the body--his pas de deux can have an X-rated quality--so you feel the argument he's making.
