Police Ask Public For Tips in Killing of Danny Vega

Police Ask Public For Tips in Killing of Danny Vega

Despite patchy information and few new leads, Seattle police are continuing the hunt for the teens who beat salon owner Danny Vega, who died over the weekend from his injuries. Vega, who was openly gay, was assaulted and robbed by "three black males", while walking through South Seattle on November 15. Because of his injuries, he was able to give little information about his attackers before he died. more ›

South Seattle Shooter On The Run

It's not shoot-'em-up Friday, but still one man is dead and another on the run after an early morning shooting in the Rainer Valley area. Seattle police officers responded to multiple 911 calls Thursday morning around 3 a.m., reporting a disturbance between two men that ended with 4 to 6 gunshots fired in the area of Rainier Avenue South and South Byron Street. The victim, a 31-year-old male, was rushed to Harborview, where he later died of his gunshot wounds. Police are on the hunt for the shooting suspect, who is still at large and believed to have driven off in a pick-up truck. more ›

Pistol-Whipping So Not Cool, South Seattle

A man was pistol-whipped and robbed at gunpoint around 3 a.m. this morning in South Seattle. Police officers are still searching for the three male suspects, who are believed to have driven off in a blue Chevy Impala, with chrome wheels and tinted windows. Seriously, who pimps out an Impala? Having not suffered life-threatening injuries, the victim was treated on site. The attack occurred in a gas station parking lot, within the 6600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way South. more ›

Poll Reveals Perturbing Attitudes Towards Violence

Seattlest is not sure what to do with this P-I story about a poll on kids' perception of violence. The gist of the article is that according to Junior Achievement's survey, a startling percentage of kids in the U.S. don't seem to feel like violence in their communities is all that noteworthy--and that data resonates profoundly with the experience of many in South and Southeast Seatte. Presumably, the poll was faulty in some way, phrased poorly or not asking the right questions, because there's not a non-sociopathic kid in the world who isn't concerned when their friend gets shot at the mall. (Even as a young kid, we could recognize that "when is it okay to hit somebody?" was a dirty trick question.) It is conceivable, however, that street violence feels so entrenched in some Seattle neighborhoods that a kid could take the attitude that change isn't possible. more ›

Cause of Death Discovered in South Seattle Body Dump

Remember how we said the story of a body dump in South Seattle last week, kept getting stranger, despite being pretty bizarre to begin with? Well, with each detail that is released the strangeness continues. Today police announced a 27-year-old man from Shoreline, Gabriel Phipps, has been charged with second-degree murder in the case. According to newly released details, Phipps strangled his victim with a belt while driving before dumping the body. We've all heard and seen of a lot of strange and stupid multi-tasking by drivers, but this is definitely the first (and hopefully the only) time we'll hear this one. more ›

Arrest Made in South Seattle Body Dump

It may not be The Sopranos, but the story of a body dump in broad daylight in South Seattle yesterday is becoming increasingly strange. Police arrested and booked a suspect this morning and the suspect is now under investigation for murder. The victim was a white man in his 60s who appeared to have medical or surgical instruments and tubes still attached to his body. Some reports say he also had a belt around his neck at the time of the body dump. Whichever detail is true, it adds an extra element of creepiness and shudders to the story. more ›

Police Investigating Body Dump in South Seattle

Police Investigating Body Dump in South Seattle

If The Sopranos took place in Seattle, we always imagined the mob haunts would be in industrial south Seattle, with the Bada Bing on Airport Way South. So the report of a body being dumped out of a moving vehicle at Ninth Avenue South and South Dakota Street at 7:30 this morning sits well with our seedy visions. more ›

On Second Thought, Don't Rob Your Mom

Oh, stupid criminals...you may have a new low to aspire to. A 22-year-old was arrested Tuesday in South Seattle for attempting to burglarize his own mother's house. The kid's mom and other family members confronted him and his 15-year-old accomplice in the midst of the would-be armed robbery and caused the kids to flee the scene. The pair were quickly arrested and await charges. We imagine this is one case where Mom won't be bailing you out. more ›

Is Groping the New Stabbing?

Is Groping the New Stabbing?

Just last week, Seattlest reported to you that there seemed to be an alarming number of stabbings in Seattle, judging by local news reports. While we haven't noticed many stabbing-related stories this week, it appears there is a new crime du jour in the headlines: serial anonymous groping. We've already written about south Seattle's serial groper twice this week. With yesterday's arrest of a suspect in the south Seattle attacks, we were hoping to see 100% fewer headlines about anonymous groping assaults. No such luck. Our nightly perusal of local news websites found this headline on KOMO 4: "Police seek public's help in nailing Puyallup groper." The headline was located directly underneath the story regarding the arrest of Darin Boler, Seattle's suspected serial groper.

Suspected South Seattle Groper Arrested

Suspected South Seattle Groper Arrested

At an afternoon press conference, the Seattle Police announced they have arrested a man they believe groped an Asian woman in South Seattle on Saturday and who they hope may be behind over two-dozen similar attacks. Darin Boler has been charged with second-degree robbery and fourth-degree assault for Saturday's incident. (The robbery charge is for stealing a would-be-witness' cell phone/camera.) Boler is a registered sex offender and has been previously convicted for raping a child and robbery. He is currently being held on a $500,000 bond. Hopefully, this is the beginning of the end of the attacks that have terrorized South Seattle residents for over two years. more ›

South Seattle Groper Strikes Again

South Seattle Groper Strikes Again

The man Seattle police simply call "the groper" has attacked another woman in South Seattle. The serial sexual assaulter grabbed an Asian-American woman who was walking with a toddler on Saturday morning in the 7500 block of Renton Avenue South. The victim screamed, drawing the attention of several witnesses, including one who tried to take a photo of the attacker's car and license plate with a cell phone camera. For his efforts, the good Samaritan was charged by the attacker, pushed to the ground, and his cell phone was stolen. While the groper's attention was on the good Samaritan as he ran away, the victim of the assault also fled the scene and has not been located by police. more ›

Drinks and Conversation, a Little Drive, a Profane, Drunken Tirade Four Hours Later...

We failed to notice yesterday, among all the hubub over Councilman Richard McIver's arrest on domestic violence charges, a post from Seattle Weekly political reporter Aimee Curl. McIver remains in jail and has claimed he'll be pleading "not guilty" to the charges. Columnist Robert Jamieson Jr. is taking him to task in today's P-I stating, "For his sake, that stance had better just be a legal formality before coming clean -- or a typo. Otherwise, his career is toast." Declaring any careers toast might be a bit premature, but it's clear the situation isn't good for either McIver right now. His wife is recanting, to some extent, but the initial impression that he allegedly "repeatedly grabbed his wife by the throat and arm during a profane, drunken tirade in their South Seattle home early Wednesday," seems to be sticking. more ›

Harnessing The Wind For Fun And Profit

Harnessing The Wind For Fun And Profit

Alternative energy in the Pacific Northwest can mean biodiesel, ethanol, nuclear, hydro-electric, pedal power or a sticker on the back of your Volvo complaining about the war, but rarely do we hear much about wind farms. You’ve seen the photographs of wind farms and they always look really cool in a kind of sterile future-topia way and you get how they work: Wind turns windmill, windmill turns turbine = electricity that doesn’t require unsavory political relationships or ass raping the earth. It’s not completely free of drawbacks, of course, and Wikipedia’s got the whole yay vs nay thing covered (it’s clean, it kills birds and trees), but we’re thinking we should get to the Seattle hearing on the Kittitas Valley Wind Power Project tonight to figure out exactly what’s going on. more ›
