Huskies Softball Season May Not End Well

Huskies Softball Season May Not End Well

Well, this isn't exactly how this was supposed to go. The all-powerful UW softball team was supposed to go to Oklahoma City, tear up some other teams, and come back to Seattle with the national championship trophy for the second straight year because that shit is ours. Not so fast. more ›

How Not To Celebrate Winning, and Other Weekend Sports Notes

Seattle Sports Stuck In Inescapable Time Loop

Seattle Sports Stuck In Inescapable Time Loop

This weekend, the Sounders lost at home again, and so did the Mariners. The UW softball team continued to be awesome. This trio of plotlines has repeated itself enough that it’s starting to feel like that movie Groundhog Day. As we see it, the only way out of this endless cycle is for Bill Murray to sleep with Andie MacDowell, at which time it will become February 3, 1993, and we will be forced to relive puberty. more ›

On Montlake, A Ray of Sun in a Troubled Sports World

On Montlake, A Ray of Sun in a Troubled Sports World

We know that in general it's hard to be a Seattle sports fan, and the past few days have been a particularly rough patch in a perpetually dejected, "We'll get 'em next time" sort of existence. more ›

ALEXIE COMES TO TOWN: Sherman Alexie will be reading poetry from his book War Dances tonight at Elliott Bay Book Company with Arizona's emerging poet Sherwin Bitsui and the fabulous folks of Copper Canyon Press. National Poetry Month is almost over (!) and tonight also presents a great opportunity to give Alexie a high five for his recent, amazingly awesome and well-deserved PEN/Faulkner Award achievement. more ›

In Which We Discuss the UW, and the Horrible Idea of an MLS Strike

In Which We Discuss the UW, and the Horrible Idea of an MLS Strike

The NCAA Selection Committee, who'll pick the 65-team bracket Sunday, can be a bitch if they're not sufficiently impressed, kind of like the girl in biology class who snubbed us for that taller upperclassman before Sadie Hawkins. (We're not still bitter.) The good news is the Huskies took a step towards an invitation last night, coming from behind to beat Oregon State 59-52 in the quarterfinals of the Pac-10 Tournament. more ›

Husky Softballers Are National Champs

Highlights above of Washington's 3-2 victory in game two of the Women's College World Series, giving them a sweep of Florida for the championship. It's the first national championship for Husky softball, the fifth overall NCAA title for the school. more ›

Yes, Florida, We are Rubbing in This Win

We've already recapped the UW vs. UF woman's softball World Series game one, but we really wanted to rub in the win just once more, this time with video. more ›

Washington 8, Florida 0

Washington 8, Florida 0

The University of Washington women's softballers are one win away from a national championship after spanking Florida tonight. Sorry to compare Husky softball to Mariner baseball, but this game reminded us so much of the Mariners' 1995 one-game divisional playoff win, we have to mention it. more ›

UDub Looks to Gator Done

UDub Looks to Gator Done

The University of Washington softball team, led by known Canadian Danielle Lawrie, will face the perennial NCAA Champions in everything University of Florida Gators in a best two-out-of-three series starting tonight. Yesterday the Huskies beat Georgia on the second try, and the Gators beat Alabama on a walk off grand slam, holy crap. more ›

UW Softball Heads to Oklahoma City for World Series

Probably the only World Series Seattle will see this year, as the University of Washington's softball team advanced to the Women's College World Series on Sunday after shutting out Georgia Tech 7-0. Pitcher (and big hitter) Danielle Lawrie threw a three-hit shutout to give the Huskies their ninth appearance in the World Series and their first since 2007. Their final game against Georgia will be play on Thursday in of all places, Seattle-Sonics-basketball-team-stealing Oklahoma City.

Garfield High School Softball Bus Crashes, Loses Roof

A charter bus carrying the Garfield High School softball team crashed into a low pedestrian overpass in the Arboretum last night, shearing the roof off the bus. Five students who were passengers were taken to Harborview Medical Center after complaining of back and neck pain. Though none of the injuries appeared to be serious, the girls were taken to the hospital by ambulance. more ›

A'bubblin' Crude @ Gas Works

A'bubblin' Crude @ Gas Works

Gas Works Park may not recover its former place as our #1 greatest park ever after its little tar leak last week. We took a walk over there yesterday and wandered around what was basically an empty space on a gray and prematurely cold day, pressing our nose up against the chain link here and there and dwelling on what exactly this park sits on top of: benzene, mercury, lead, etc. It's gross. more ›

Schoolkids Figure Out Junk Food Available Off Campus

Schoolkids Figure Out Junk Food Available Off Campus

Turns out it's not so easy to outfox young and dedicated junk food consumers, such as students at Cleveland High School:

Chips and cookies were replaced in vending machines with granola bars and trail mix; sugary drinks are no longer sold in schools. Cleveland fell into line with other schools, offering healthier foods in its cafeteria and vending machines. more ›

Shanghaiist probably knows a little more about China than the Chicago Sun-Times. Giving them the benefit of the doubt on that one. The city does to have a music scene. Don't even front like they don't. They also have Dorito bananas and white guys shopping for wives. What they don't have is any more tolerance for jaywalkers. more ›

Latino a Go-Go in the Central District

Latino a Go-Go in the Central District

There's a whole lot of latino going on in the park right outside our house in the Central District. Normally our neighborhood is exceptionally quiet all day, save for the sound of baking donuts from Gai's, until the little league softball or pee-wee football teams start showing up around 2:30. So we were mighty surprised to hear quite the ruckus out in Judkins Park, and peeking out we saw at least a couple hundred people in the park--more than pass through in a month, we'd wager. more ›

All The News That's Fit To Post

-More ex-Mariners in the news, but this guy's still playing ball. Sort of. The Mets signed Brett Boone to a minor league contract today which could net him up to $1.5 million for next season. Oh, how the O-ver-Ra-ted have fallen. Boone earned almost $10 million while getting cut from the Mariners and Twins last year and batting .221. Seattlest earned -$300 to get cut from our summer softball league last year with the same average but with an apparently more imperfect ass. more ›

Good Job King County Elections

Fraternity Snoqualmie Nudestock (Grapes Optional)

Fraternity Snoqualmie Nudestock (Grapes Optional)

The Mariner’s only have Felix's pitching to talk about, so in lieu of good baseball, we just got served a softball that Bea Arthur could hit out of the park blindfolded. Ladies and gentlemen (and perverts), Seattlest presents: Nudestock. The local membership-based “clothing optional” Fraternity Snoqualmie -- lurking nearby the otherwise squeaky-clean Issaquah environs -- is inviting you to their annual flesh fest. Apparently you need not be a member to join, but we predict you'll see lots of other members there. more ›

Canada: Land of Give'r

The past holiday weekend offered a bevvy of Seattle activities, from the Folklife Festival to Sasquatch, to SIFF, and we’re sure there’s more. Well, we’re pretty sure, because some of us went to Canada instead. Just a quick jaunt to Vancouver on Sunday for some biking; perhaps we’d even try to catch the Bloc Party show that evening at the Commodore since somehow we’ve missed out on every other opportunity to see them in what has been a near blitzkreig of Bloc Party show dates in Seattle over the past few months. more ›

Local Ball Teams Exhibit Competence
