Music For Your Millionth Snow Day

The eerily dusky orange skies never did stop dumping snow on our plans last night. Instead of screaming and ripping out our hair in a cabin-feverish craze, we clicked over to Raindrophustla, a dependable source for entertainment and strange, local-music-oriented Youtube videos, to see what the Hustlas could offer us in terms of musical distraction. The Seattle blog didn't let us down. A downloadable, punk-spirited, indie rock-rinsed, effin' wonderful mix, entitled "Snowed In," is available on Raindrop--you should immediately left click, save as, extract, and play in your favorite media player, for sanity's sake. The Thermals, Velella Vellela, Raphael Saadiq...yessss. more ›

Snow Day Project: Molasses Cookies

Snow Day Project: Molasses Cookies

Recently, we’ve been hit with a long string of requests for a molasses cookie recipe. For some of you on-top-of-things types, we may have come too late in the holiday cookie-baking process. We can only hope you’ll consider making more as the city is buried under a blanket of snow, so: we know you’re home, we know you have time, and we know you want cookies. more ›

A Snowy Song for a Snowy Day

A Snowy Song for a Snowy Day

Iceland pop collective Benni Hemm Hemmi knows snow. The song below, "Snjór ljós snjór" (translated: "Snow Light Snow"), captures the quiet calm that comes with falling snow, as well as that sense of barely contained excitement, making it the perfect song for a day like today. more ›

Creative Drinking Solutions for Snow Day Boredom

Creative Drinking Solutions for Snow Day Boredom

You've called in to work, gotten some laundry in the wash, taken the dog out for a quick walk. What's left to do on this very snowy day? Drink! Inspired by one of our friend's Twitter posts at 8 a.m. announcing he was drinking vodka and cranberry already, we spent some time with our housemates discussing the most revolting creative shots we've ever tossed back. Read about our top three, and then raid your liquor cabinet. A (wo)man's gotta do something to keep warm. more ›

Snow Day, With Snow This Time

We woke up to a beautiful crunchy layer of snow blanketing the neighborhood and a couple email alerts telling us that the Seattle School District has declared a second snow day. Wahoo! We hope everyone stays safe and warm today, and that everyone is fully stocked with entertaining books, movies and websites for the duration. Here's a story about a man who plans to install a video camera in his head. more ›

Snow Day!

Seattle Public Schools just declared a snow day--no joke--and there is a "winter weather advisory" out for our area, says the National Weather Service. Seattlest will, of course, be going to work. We're that dedicated, but we are still keeping our fingers crossed that the boss will send everyone straight back home. That has everything to do with dangerous snow and nothing to do with the Re-Bar stamp on our right wrist from last night, by the way. more ›

Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, Dec. 12-14

Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, Dec. 12-14

JUST LIKE CLOCKWORK: This is your best bet for smooth grooving local hiphop this weekend. Clockwork probably make you very happy, but Macklemore is guaranteed to do so; his live show is unstoppably entertaining and his songs are both thoughtful and hilarious. This is his first show in town since July, people. Plus, XPerience might sing and Candidt might do "VooDoo." All of those prospects in combination are absolutely worth the rainy drive to Nectar. more ›

Seattlest Interview: Dom Zook of GadZook Films

The goal is to write, shoot, edit and otherwise produce a short film in 48 hours or less. Beyond lining up a crew, equipment and possibly a cast and locations, you are forbidden from preparing in any other way. Pre-planning is next to impossible anyway because you don't know what genre you're preparing for until the project begins. Teams choose a genre out of a hat and are given three story elements - a character, a line of dialogue and a prop - with which to write their script. All the elements must exist in the final movie and it must be turned in on time to be considered for any awards. We're competing against 40 other teams this year, which is amazing considering last year we barely broke 20. more ›

L.A. Times vs. The Bill And Melinda Gates Foundation

L.A. Times vs. The Bill And Melinda Gates Foundation

While it's tempting to make fun of the Seattle Times (or the P-I, for that matter) for not getting the story the Los Angeles Times reported this weekend on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the conflicts that exist between the foundation's charitable work and its financial holdings, and while we're somewhat inclined to point out the fact that no one in Seattle is in a position to say boo to the Gates Foundation, it's really just fantastic work by the L.A. Times which continues to be one of the country's best newspapers despite the fact that it's under assault by its owner the Chicago Tribune. The Gates Foundation is based here so it's easy to lose sight of their place in the universe and jump on them for things like buying up the land that contains Seattle's only municipal skatepark and bulldozing it, but they're really a global giant with a tremendous amount of money. Thank you to the L.A. Times for pointing out that while a fraction of that money is injected directly into various charitable causes the Foundation also has a mountain of cash the size of Rainier that can also be working either for, or, in some cases against, those same causes. Take some time out on Snow Day #1 2007 to read the entire article - We learned more about the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation from that piece than we had previously through years worth of Seattle Times and Post Intelligencer full-release massage pieces. Kudos, at least, to the Seattle Times for reprinting it. more ›
