Seattle to Portland: Breakfast @ The Spar

As 7:30 a.m. rolled around, we were ready for breakfast and tired of slowly following the STP riders through Kent, so we made our way back to I-5 and headed south to the first of two stops that took us away from the bicyclists' course. more ›

Seattle Weekly Still Smokin'

Seattle Weekly Still Smokin'

Divey holes-in-the-wall continue to close or come up for sale with their owners shaking a yellowed fist at the smoking ban, but so far the public outcry against the 25' rule has been nonexistent. Philip Dawdy lets us know that at least one reporter is not going to let it die without a fight in the current Seattle Weekly. more ›

ACLU vs. Seattle Smoking Ban

ACLU vs. Seattle Smoking Ban

Seattlest posted a lament recently about the unexpected down-side to the new indoor smoking ban, specifically our newly rediscovered sense of smell. Where is the justice in prohibiting one foul odor only to open the floodgates to lesser noxious fumes? Apparently, the champions of freedom at the ACLU read Seattlest, as they have now seized this historic opportunity to answer the call to justice (from their recent news alert): more ›

Oneida and Kinski at Neumo’s, Or "The Constant Cycling of Hyper-Minimal Progressions"

Oneida and Kinski at Neumo’s, Or "The Constant Cycling of Hyper-Minimal Progressions"

Masters of atmospheric drone/psych/whatchamacallit rock Kinski and Oneida put on a powerful show at Neumo's last Saturday, sharing the stage for a final jam session following their individual sets. There's enough stylistic overlap between the two bands that its surprising when people you've never heard of who write about music more often compare Oneida to the more abstract noise efforts of Sonic Youth than with the more obviously similar Kinski. The predominantly instrumental and intense, hypnotic rock sound is perhaps better described by the geniuses at Pitchfork in this less than glowing review of the 2004 release Secret Wars "....Songs are built atop the constant cycling of hyper-minimal progressions, fairly bludgeoning the listener into a state of docility with as minimal an approach as possible." Old Smokes Homes

Old Smokes Homes

Seattlest vividly remembers when we were about five years old, sitting in our aunt's kitchen watching our grandmother dragging off a filterless cigarette, blowing columns of smoke out her nose like a possessed hell-horse (seriously, that woman had nostrils of equine proportions). We thought smoking was ipso facto with being older--a rite you become entitled to once you pass a mysterious life milestone that at the time was well beyond our grasp. Our perspective on smoking changed rather dramatically in the decades that followed, but it doesn't change the fact that some old people hate the smoking ban. Wheeling 25 feet outside for a toke is not high on their list of enjoyable activities, it seems. more ›

For the Collective Good

For the Collective Good

Despite the warnings that the smoking ban would ensure anarchy and despair on the nightlife front, instead smoking has strengthened its role as a social lubricant. A new brand of comradery is being forged nightly as smokers go outside for their nicotine fix. This isn't all that surprising, since people are social creatures, not unlike the uber-cute momonga. Not to be too Fremont-hippie about this, but we crave company and need one another, knowing we can get more done together than we can alone. more ›

Smoke Free World Threatened

Seattle smokers are breathing a little, uh, easier, today after the state Supreme Court struck down a Pierce County smoking ban, stating that banning smoking from Pierce County bars, restaurants, and casinos is in conflict with state law. more ›
