The Bangles hit the stage at the Showbox Market last Saturday. This "gallery" of two photos from their show was all they approved us to use. As an aging rock star should you be more concerned about your looks or entertaining your fans and enjoying your fame? Does it have to be a choice?
Photos of The Bangles; Or, How To Age Gracefully as a Rock Star
The Bangles Return for a Blast From the Past Tomorrow
Don't know about you, but for us the Bangles represent a simpler time in music where pop was about the pain of love and wishing for it back. The twelve-year-old in us is screaming with delight to know The Bangles are back and stopping in Seattle Saturday to take us back in time.
PM Video: Long Winters at City Arts Fest
The Long Winters has only been John Roderick and some friends to do the backing instrumentals since Sean Nelson split off and formed Harvey Danger. They finally reunited last night for an incredible show with the School of Rock backing them up. Talk about once in a lifetime show! We caught the duo singing "Putting the Day to Bed" for your viewing pleasure.
Seattlest Music Suggests Tonight: David Bazan and Rocky Votolato at Showbox
Just like almost every other weekend has been since we can all remember, it's a little dreary and you aren't sure you feel like going out and doing anything. Then you look around for what shows are going on. If you see a few you're interested in and can't really decide, let us do that for you. Tonight is the veteran musician David Bazan with his semi-new and now fully broken in band. We caught their first show together at Bumbershoot last year and it didn't seem to be their first gig together, but there you have it. Clean and beautiful from the start. The next performance was Head and the Heart (HATH) opening for them at the Showbox last year. It was an incredibly fun show with HATH right in their element with the legendary Seattle rock singer as the headliner. The entire evening meshed into this fantastic fun folk and rock groove.
Will Call: Concerts On Sale This Week
We're trying something new this week. We have a hard time keeping track of what tickes go on sale on which days--so we assume you probably have the same problem. To help us both out, we're going to start dropping you a note about what goes on sale each week. Be sure to send us one if we missed something, or you want more info.
Can't Miss It: Monday
Today's offerings: The Satori Group's dark tale in Pioneer Square; 70s cheesy and classic films in the Central District; old school party hip hop at Showbox at the Market.
Hot Bodies Rocks the Showbox Tonight and Gives Seattlest the Lowdown
You may or may not have heard of Hot Bodies in Motion (HBIM), but you have to admit it's a killer name--even if you have no idea who they are. Here at Seattlest, we've come to know and love this band for one very good reason: they don't play folk/Americana/singer-songwriter style tunes. In fact, that might be the very reason you haven't heard about them.
You Just Can't Prepare For Of Montreal
We can hardly contain our excitement for of Montreal’s show tonight at the Showbox Market. When we’re feeling down, we put these guys on the stereo and, magically, feel like we’re deep in a dream state. In a place filled with wild beats, varied instruments and Kevin Barnes’ awkward vocals. We’ve been excited to see them perform since the moment the Seattle stop on their tour was announced. After last year’s performance, our mouths and eyes were wide in awe and we anticipate another show just as exciting with more theater than concert. We’re definitely okay with that. Will we see more pigs and eye balls on stage? We sure hope so!
Past and Future Face Off with Tonight's Music Options
Tonight's musical choices are ones that cause us to square off our fondness of the past against our excitement about the future.
Josh Radin Wooed the Crowd (We're No Exception)
Josh Radin is known to the general public for his songs on popular television shows and movies. We learned at the Showbox Market show last week that he's a lot more than that. He's a troubadour at heart, a storyteller, and regular joe who happened to pick up a guitar a little while back.
Gallery: Morcheeba Rocked the Showbox
Morcheeba's sold out show at the Showbox Market Tuesday night started with Mumblers, which seemed like an odd collection of musicians seemingly thrown together. Their eclectic sound featured a wide variety of instruments including a french horn, a flute and on some songs with a mini-tuba. Morcheeba, on the other hand, felt like a tight-knit group of friends who enjoy jamming together. Their unique blend of spacey trip-hop sound melded perfectly with the swirling fog and multi-colored light show. Lead singer Skye Edwards seemed to float above the adoring yet tightly packed crowd. Honestly, we could have watched them perform all night.
The Head and the Heart's Skyrocketing Success Continues
The Head and the Heart is a well-rounded, fun, engrossing group of musicians that have gone from meeting at a dive bar's open mic night to critical acclaim with more than modest success (i.e. signing to Sub Pop) in less than a year. All of these things have culminated in a headlining show at the Showbox Market set for April 29th (that's 70 days from now).
Countdown in photos: Day 26
I've already posted a countdown entry for another band of the same show from which today's shot comes. That's because it was a show of epic proportions. Not only was it three amazingly talented groups taking the stage, but they were all local.
Countdown in Photos: Day 16
Seattlest will be counting down to 2011 with a series of posts on our highlights of this year and what we're looking forward to in the next. Got a list to suggest? Send it our way. See the entire series here.
Gallery: The Posies/Brendan Benson/Aqueduct
The Posies, Brendan Benson & Aqueduct ended their five week tour on Saturday night at the Showbox Market to a nearly sold out crowd. Our group informally dubbed the show “jumpfest” after Jon Auer got a case of jumping through both Brendan Benson & The Posies sets. Also we have to give huge credit to Auer and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies for playing two sets for each show: first with Brendan Benson, then coming back with The Posies as well. Star Anna made a guest appearance for one song, “Sad to Be Aware”. It was a show that left everyone happy to say the least.

The Posies Are Coming, The Posies Are Coming!
Local band, The Posies are making an appearance tonight at the Showbox and we couldn’t be happier. We overheard a conversation a few months ago that mentioned this former Bellingham-based band, then picked up their latest album Blood/Candy and have been hooked since. Formed back in 1987 and then recorded their first album in a family’s studio, The Posies were at it until the late 90s, when they went their own ways until reuniting in 2005. During their hiatus, band members all went into different directions, from going home to France to settling back in Seattle, some how they all came back together again for all more fun. We hope they bring breakout the piano, as a few of their tracks on Blood/Candy exhibit, and their original stuff does as well.
Gallery: The Expendables
The wet fall night didn’t keep the faithful fans of The Expendables away from their show at the Showbox Market on Wednesday night. Once we saw the stage crew bring out their collection of Mesa Boogie amps, there was no doubt this would be a loud show. The Expendables entertained their all-ages attendees for more than 90 minutes with most tracks from their current album, Prove It. Needless to say the crowd was into it the entire time, as were we.
Preview: The Expendables take on Showbox Market
Trot on down to Showbox Market on Wednesday night to see The Expendables stop by our beloved city. They are in the home stretch of their current tour and hopefully they will feel almost at home in Seattle as they do in their hometown of Santa Cruz, California (it’s right on the water too). The group, which has played with the Vans Warped Tour and performed with reggae legend Eek-A-Mouse, brings its own blend of genre-mixing of music. That signature combinationf reggae, punk and a dash of metal comes through on The Expendables’ fifth album, Prove It.
Gallery: The Frames, Two Encores Wasn't Enough.
The Frames performed Friday night for a sold out crowd at the Showbox Market. It was a personal bucket list show as you could tell from the preview post. It exceeded any expectation we might have had and then some. Not only did they play an epic 2 1/2 hour set, but the crowd seemed to be more tired than they were at the end of the night. During one of Glen's great story-telling breaks, he told us that the band had stopped by a pub the day before to have a couple pints (could listen to that man speak for days and never tire of it). A young guy was playing solo and singing at the back of the bar and despite the loud conversations threatening to overpower his music, he continued on with heart. They enjoyed his music so much, that they decided to bring him to their show the next day. One hitch, he wasn't 21 yet and it was a 21+ show. Somehow they managed to get him in and asked that he come on stage and play a song between their two encores. He was fantastic. His first name is Dylan, but we couldn't quite catch his last (comment if you got the full name, we'd love to find out!) For more shots, check out the flickr collection.
Gallery: That Locals Show Where Our Heads Exploded (or David Bazan & Friends at the Showbox)
You know when you're anticipating something, and then it happens and it's even better than you imagined? Take that feeling and multiply it twice over and you'll understand what it was like on Saturday at the Showbox Market. Damien Jurado was beautiful, timid, and incredible as always. His soft-spoken nature was shoved aside as he sang and bantered on stage with his backing band (which included members of Kay Kay and his Weathered Underground as well as Sam from Hey Marseilles).
Local Lineup Tonight That Will Make Your Head Explode
Three headliner-worthy acts are playing, together, at the Showbox Market in a few hours. It starts with the beautiful voice of Damien Jurado. He's been around the Seattle music scene for years but has stayed somewhat under the radar. We're clueless how he's managed to do this since he's so talented. It's most likely his quiet demeanor and soft-spoken, but kind personality that doesn't exactly scream "listen to me!". Though, when he begins to play, the crowd tends to become pretty quiet to let the music radiate throughout the room.
Blonde Redhead at the Showbox Wednesday
Blonde Redhead is a pair of Italian-born twins, Amedeo and Simone Pace, that now call New York home by way of Montreal and Boston. They, along with Kazu Makino, formed the band back in '93 with a rotating cast of bass players. Their music is softly-flowing melodic rock with electronic backing. The addition of Kazu's enchanting voice washes over you like a constant and rhythmic river of music. Over the years their sound has been pretty consistent so if you've been a fan in the past their new album, Penny Sparkle released in September, won't disappoint. Like their music, live performances are pretty subdued but beautiful in sound and visuals. We're looking forward to it.
Gallery: A Perfect Circle at the Showbox Saturday
The Saturday Perfect Circle show blew everyone away, but even before it began there were fans insanely shouting "Maynard" over and over. As a matter of fact, the Green Room bar attached to the Showbox had to close its doors to new customers after reaching its limit at 6 p.m. The show didn't even start until 9! There was a lot of waiting around, drinking of tasty beverages, and having fun with friends. It made the whole thing a night out rather than just a show which added that much more excitement and anticipation to the evening. You can relive (or jealously view) some shots from the evening below with a larger set of photos at the Flickr set.
Seattle's Top Shows of November
Let's be honest: November is a good month for the beginnings of shitty weather and holiday stress. We have few memories of this month yielding much in the way of excellent shows or substantial numbers of bands coming through our fair city. However, this year around, it's clear that the rock gods are on out side: November closely mirrors October in terms of a huge dose of amazing bands. Let's salute the coming dark months together with some of the month's most anticipated shows.
Showbox Rocked Friday: Menomena Showed Us How It's Done
The band may have taken some time off for other projects, but they didn't skip a beat at Friday night's show. The entire room was filled with the voices of fans singing along to new and old songs alike. Man, did Seattle miss them...and holy crap are we excited that they're back. Tu Fawning will now join them for a majority of their tour, but for the Seattle show Say Hi filled the middle band shoes. We enjoyed the set, but aren't sure it held up to some of the hype we've been hearing around town.
Gallery: The Hold Steady Didn't Hold Back
As mentioned in our preview, we weren't sure what to expect from Friday's show, having lost Franz Nicolay, The Hold Steady's enigmatic keyboardist. We can happily report that it doesn't seem to have slowed the band down one bit. Craig Finn and Tad Kubler brought in the crowd with their playful and down-to-earth attitude and kept them there with easily accessible lyrics of teenaged angst. By the middle of their set, the Showbox was packed with fans young and old (and the very young, as evidenced by a tween boy right up front). The Hold Steady has to know by now, they'll always be welcomed back to Seattle with open arms.
Get Your Tickets Early to Upcoming Showbox Shows
We didn't go to a single concert at the Showbox last year. Ok, so we saw Obama at the SoDo, but that's not nearly the same thing, even though there were bands preceding the politics. It's most unusual for us to have a Showbox-free year, that's for sure.
