Morgen takes us once again down to Portland for MusicFest Northwest. This time she goes with a more artistic photo of a killer Canadian band, The Handsome Furs. She recounts one of her favorite shows of the entire festival that occurred on her birthday no less.
Countdown in Photos #14: Handsome Furs
Countdown in Photos #8: U2
Day eight of our countdown in photos is here and you're in for a treat. As we sift through the last year's photos all the memories come rushing back and Morgen is excited to share those with you. Today she takes you back to down to what was Qwest Stadium with the most massive show we have seen in Seattle for a long time, if ever, with U2.
Tonight's Kris Orlowski's CD Release Party is a Pre-Thanksgiving Treat
Kris Orlowski has one more reason for us to give thanks this week with a cd release show for his new album Warsaw. We've caught a glimpse of what you're in store for and this is a show you don't want to miss. With Hot Bodies in Motion and Smokey Brites rounding out the bill it's the best show you'll see all week (if not all month).
Rainn Wilson Shows Off His Friends Tomorrow (and Maybe Today?) at Paramount
Rainn Wilson has way more friends in real life than Dwight, his alter-ego from The Office. He's bringing a slew of musicians, actors and just plain ol' good people to hang out with him this Saturday at the Paramount. It's bound to be a crazy night of fun that raises funds for the Mona Foundation to boot.
The Bangles Return for a Blast From the Past Tomorrow
Don't know about you, but for us the Bangles represent a simpler time in music where pop was about the pain of love and wishing for it back. The twelve-year-old in us is screaming with delight to know The Bangles are back and stopping in Seattle Saturday to take us back in time.
Ain't Misbehavin' Back for Another Spin on the Dance Floor
Ain't Misbehavin', based on the 1929 Fats Waller tune of the same name, is more of a revue than an actual musical, and pays tribute to the triumphs and contributions of America's black musicians. And it's coming back to town, as performed by the Pacific Jazz Institute. So if you missed it last time, you're fresh out of excuses.
City Arts Gallery: The Long Winters Back Together Again
The Long Winters with Campfire OK, Cobirds Unite and Cataldo was our most anticipated show of City Arts Festival. Without a doubt, it lived up to, and then surpassed our expectations. What an incredible, surprising, fun and enchanting night we had--check out our photographic evidence.
Sting is Coming, Sting is Coming!
Some of you may be rolling your eyes, but there are just some musicians who simply define a generation, and influence future generations of artists. In our opinion, Sting is one of those people.
Gallery & Review: The Good Hurt CD Release Party
The Good Hurt celebrated their CD release at Chop Suey Friday night with a house full of friends, fans and dancing. It was also the kick off show for their second tour this year. These guys have been pushing hard for the last couple of years and there's no sign of them stopping.
Tonight: Weezer's Finally Going Back in Time
To say that Weezer has changed since Rivers Cuomo decided to take a hiatus in '97 (along with the rest of the band) would be an understatement. The rant that is to follow comes from the high school version of myself that longs for the days of The Blue Album and Pinkerton, so take it with a grain of salt, if you will.
Capitol Hill Block Party: Let the Madness Begin
The Capitol Hill Block Party can be kind of intimidating. But no worries--Seattlest's dynamic music duo, Lily and Morgen, are ready to walk you through it.
Beatrix Potter for Grown-Ups at Annex Theatre
If you're looking for a cute and pleasant retelling of a familiar children's story, you won't find it in The Tale of Jemima Canard, which is running now at Annex. The play, an adaptation of Beatrix Potter's popular The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, renders a beloved roster of anthropomorphised critters as grisly shadows of Potter's conceptions. Playwright Brandon J. Simmons injects into the story a considerable helping of sexual content (including an attempted rape), plenty of fisticuffs, and more than a little psychological unhinging, turning a light and accessible narrative on its ear.
Satori Group's Fabulous Prizes: Revisionist Lives
The Satori Loft is a hell of a space. It isn't gilded with gold leaf or vintage moulding; it feels worked-in, like a place where hands have gotten dirty. It's a 'Lab,' the home of the burgeoning Satori Group, a place for "the development of new work, through ensemble generation and collaboration with guest artists and playwrights." True to their focus, they bring to Seattle the debut of Fabulous Prizes, by Seattle playwright Neil Ferron. And what better venue for the play to attain the light of day, having received the treatment of Satori's First Look Series?
Doe Bay Fest: On Sale Tomorrow & Probably Selling Out Tomorrow
Folks, we've talked about Doe Bay Music Fest as much as possible over the last year. Mostly because we can hardly wait for it to happen, but also because it's an incredible experience and we want to share it with you. Tomorrow is the big day. Tickets for the fest go on sale and from what we've heard, they're probably not going to last much longer than the day. Last year, without nearly as much hype, it sold out within about a week. It's a bit more expensive to head out to Orcas Island, and you will probably have to deal with some annoying ferry traffic, but it's definitely worth it.
Seattlest Music Presents: The Local Strangers
It's been an incredible experience to get to know each of the three bands taking part in the first Seattlest Music Presents show. Feeling as though we've known each other for a while, the conversations take on a light-hearted and fun atmosphere. It's especially obvious when talking to The Local Strangers. Both Matt Hart and Aubrey Zoli have huge grins on their faces the entire time we speak because we're talking about what they love more than anything else in life: music. It's not just a matter of making music for them, it's what they have a passion to do. Whatever it takes to get them there they'll do it and it shows in their music. With beautiful harmonies and quotable lyrics that echo in your mind long after the music stops, you'll have no choice but to set them to repeat. The new EP will be released in physical form at our show but their first single, "Hunted by Ghosts", is available now for free download on their bandcamp site. Listen below for a taste while you read the interview, you'll thank us later.
In Focus: Cirque du Soleil's Kooza
The magical world of Cirque du Soleil comes back to Redmond with crazy acrobatics, beautiful costumes, and all the antics that make these shows so much fun!
For the Adam Carolla Show Fans Out There
You know who you are. Our evil sunny sister site LAist did an interview with co-host Teresa Strasser that's entertaining, and what the hell, it's Friday, we've already got the earthquake out of the way, take a little time for yourself. Here's Strasser on how she got the job: "They called my agent, and asked if they had anybody with a news background who is Latin. Latin newsgirls are in high demand. I was the closest thing. You get the Jew, and that’s the best we can do." Also, we learned she's a former ballerina in recovery for an eating disorder, and that Charles S. Dutton killed a man.
No Country for Old Potheads: Rick Steves' Iran
We just got this email from KCTS inviting us to stop in next Saturday, January 10, for a 3 p.m. sneak preview screening and discussion with Rick Steves about his new travel special, Rick Steves' Iran: Yesterday and Today.
