Random shootings, political fundraising, mandatory sick leave and possible parking infraction rate hikes. But hey, at least the weather's ben nice. Welcome to your Monday Seattle.
Monday Morning Headlines
Extra, Extra: Ferry Fares, Foul Weather and Fairly Good News
Disturbing behavior at a vigil for a dead woman, proposed changes (read: increases) to ride the boats, a spot for good news for an abandoned baby and yes, a little bit of weather talk. At last, it's nearly the weekend.
Fatal Drive-By Shooting on SeaTac Streets
An 18-year-old California man believed to be in town visiting relatives was the victim of last night's drive-by shooting at the intersection of 140th Street and Military Road South in SeaTac. His four male friends, all in their late teens and 20s, were in the car when the bullet struck the victim in the backseat. Immediately after, they rushed him from the SeaTac intersection to Highline Community Hospital in Burien, where the shooting victim died from multiple gunshot wounds. So far the King County Sheriff's Office is stumped. The darkly lit area didn't allow for any witnesses to see the suspected second car before it turned off at South 140th Street. However, officers are still investigating and trying to determine whether or not there was a motive behind the shooting.
Neighborhood News and Local Round-Up
- First we thought it was just Capitol Hill's little old men that were accident-prone. Now we hear about another elderly 81-year-old man who is suffering life-threatening injuries after being hit by a delivery truck this morning in the International District.
- Yesterday, U.S. Soccer announced Seattle's Qwest Field and Husky Stadium as the venues under consideration as part of their bid to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022.
South Seattle Teens Shot In The Back
The evening ended abruptly for a group of teens in South Seattle as they came under gunfire after leaving King Donuts, off Rainier Avenue South. Two teen boys, shot in the back, were transported to Harborview with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say the the gunshots, suspected to be gang related, were fired by a man standing across the street.
A Solution Would Be Nice
We don’t usually read Danny Westneat’s column, but Wednesday’s piece about another Belltown beatdown and the generally deteriorating state of Seattle’s low-crime image is increasingly common.
Neighborhood News and Local Blog Roundup
- Sable Verity wishes us all a Happy Thanksgiving, unless of course we get shot and killed before the holiday, which is becoming all too common in Seattle these days. The blog notes that this weekend, 11 people were shot in five separate incidents and one man was stabbed--all within a 36-hour time period.
- Seems like everyone in local politics has a blog these days, including Seattle City Council member Tim Burgess. Yesterday Councilmen Burgess talked about the city budget and youth violence in Seattle, a topic that desperately needs to be addressed, preferably last Friday before 11 people were shot in 36 hours.
- The Rainier Valley Post covered one of this weekend's shootings, which left two teenagers wounded. The shooting, which took place at Rainier Avenue South and South Cloverdale, is believed to be connected to the deadly weekend shooting at Southcenter Mall.
