Jack the Stoner Dog Benefit at the Bottleneck This Weekend

Every dog has its day. You may remember Jack, a black lab/Dalmatian mix who ate a marijuana stash in Seward Park a month ago, and became super-famous, with his story featured in on the local news, as well as in the Huffington Post, the New York Times, CNN, and the Chicago Tribune.

On a recent trip to Seward Park, Jen Nestor took her dog Jack, an 11-year-old Labrador mix, out for a run. Jack, clearly a free spirit, dashed off into the woods for about three minutes, only to return a little dazed and confused. The Lab mix was high as a kite. His eyes were glassy, he was stumbling and staggering, and shortly after he started throwing-up liquid marijuana (gross!). So $1,500 in veterinary bills later, Jack is okay and is believed to have discovered some of the marijuana remnants from a five-and-a-half pound stash found in the park in April.

1. Seward Park - This is where we spent last Saturday, lying on the grass, reading. There were plenty of families there already celebrating the sun, barbecuing, playing volleyball. Tons of cutie pie kids running in and out of the water.

During tomorrow night's three hour nation-wide Starbucks closure, local coffee shop Caffe Vita will be giving away free coffee and espresso drinks. Yes coffee fiends of Seattle--so that's basically all of you--that's good free coffee, just because the big chain that you feel slightly embarrassed about going to is closed. Lovely!

"After two years, it's definitely moving," writes invaluable neighborhood blogger Captain Columbia City. He talked to the market's coordinator, Karen, on Wednesday, the last day the Columbia City Farmers Market will be open this year.

Of course, Columbia City Plaza was sold to a development firm on the east coast recently, and so when the Plaza owners lease expires early next year, they'll sign a new one with the new owners. The new owners are planning on putting in a mixed use retail & condo development, but they realize that the planning & permitting process will take years, so they've very kindly offered the current space rent free for the next two years while the permitting process takes place.

Is the office slightly quieter today? Were there fewer parents dropping the little ones off at school this morning? Were there a lot more parked cars in certain spots around Wedgwood, Seward Park or Mercer Island?

CASTING CALL: Local director Garrett Bennett is looking for extras to cast in his independent film The Spy & the Sparrow.

A post in Tuesday's DCist mentioned a campaign in the other Washington to adopt a bland song named "Come to Washington" as an official "city anthem." Then, in a follow-up post, DCist nominated nine other, better songs. Readers voted for their favorites and suggested a few more. The current fave seems to be the Magnetic Fields' awesomely evocative "Washington, D.C."

If there's one thing Seattlest is sure of, it's that walking around in all this rain and cold sucks. That's why we'll be staying inside, thank you very much, until after tax day next year. But there are those of you who haven't got the sense God gave a tiny-headed grub beetle. Lots of you. Somebody keeps REI afloat after all.

Anyone else getting a little bit creeped out by the three weird Seattle murders this week?

Animal lovers, start your engines: the Furry 5K Run/Walk kicks off this Sunday at 10am in Seward Park. As an owner of two large healthy dogs plucked from rescue shelters, we have a soft spot for this perennial rite of spring. The sheer number of participants with varying types of dogs in tow is the highlight of this event benefiting local Seattle animal shelters.
