Last night, Columbia City Theater was jam-packed with anxious Pacific Northwest music lovers, all waiting for a single announcement: we wanted to know what the lineup would be at this year's Doe Bay Music Festival.
Bands To See Even if You're Not Headed to Doe Bay
More Good News for Carissa's Wierd Fans
The sorely missed Seattle band, Carissa's Wierd (not a typo) has had a bit of a revival recently. What with Hardly Art releasing a best of compilation titled They'll Only Miss You When You Leave: Songs 1996-2003 and the one-night reunion show they played at the Showbox Market in July. And fans of Carissa's Wierd have even more to look forward to as Hardly Art has just announced that they will release the band's three studio albums (Ugly But Honest, You Should Be At Home Here, Songs About Leaving) on vinyl and digitally, for the first time ever.
One More Event Tonight
We just got an email about this event from the folks at Sound Magazine, so thanks for the seven-hour heads up, we guess: "Sound Magazine presents The Song Show, an evening of amazing music and riveting onstage conversation with the Northwest's best looking artists and audience, filmed live!" The lineup is as follows: 7:30 p.m. Ross Beamish, 8:15 p.m. Kyle Bradford, 9 p.m. Betsy Olson, 9:30 p.m. Betsy Olson band set with Sera Cahoone. It's tonight at the Can Can, with tickets $5 GA and $10 VIP seating (with a better view).
Stalk Of The Town
It's been a long time since Kim had a tourist to show around, so she's looking forward to giving her father a stellar tour of Seattle and its environs. On the agenda: Chateau Ste. Michelle, Bainbridge Island, the Fremont troll, and plenty of great food--finally an excuse to go to the Kingfish! Before pops arrives, she'll kick the weekend off right, with Sera Cahoone and Zoe Muth tonight at the Tractor.
Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, Jan. 9-11
LADY SINGERS: Sera Cahoone is an alt.country goddess-in-the-making, and to hear Seattlest Kim tell it, so is Zoe Muth. The two local musicians are reason enough to get yourself on over to Tractor Tavern tonight for some beautiful, rockin' tunes and a cold beer or two. Don't forget to wear your sexiest cowboy boots.
Stalk Of The Town
She may still have far too much work to do this weekend, but Kim will emerge from her cocoon for two very important shows. Tonight, it's Sera Cahoone at a secret, undisclosed location and Kim refuses to spill the beans. Continuing the vaguely country theme, she'll end the weekend Sunday night at Chop Suey with the lovely and talented Star Anna.
Sera Cahoone's Gear Stolen, Benefit Planned
There's a banjo joke that talks about someone breaking into the banjo player's car and leaving a second banjo in the back seat. We have to say that's what entered our mind when we first heard that local multi-instrumentalist Jeff Fielder—on tour now with Sera Cahoone—had his banjo stolen. Then we immediately thought about how a good banjo is a darn expensive instrument. So are a good Dobro and a good guitar (Cahoone's guitar was also swiped).
A Local We're Totes Crushing On
Please, God. Let Seattlest wake up to Sera Cahoone strumming her acoustic guitar and humming sweetly in our direction. Let there be hot fragrant coffee on our bedside table, and maybe some bacon waiting downstairs; we're envisioning dappled sunlight on the comforter, a drowsy golden retriever at our feet, and...well, the most important part of this morning fantasy is Sera and her guitar, both of whom we are totes crushing on this week.
Weekend Music
Break out the hackysack and butterfly wings, because former Phish bassist Mike Gordon is at the Tractor tonight in support of his new solo record, The Green Sparrow.
The Weekend in Roots Music
This is going to be a damn good weekend, snow or no. And, it all starts tonight with Jack Wilson and the Wifestealers at the Sunset. Tomorrow, we've got Sera Cahoone's CD release party at the Tractor, celebrating the release of her awesome new disc Only As the Day is Long (SubPop).
Seattle to Austin
Seattlest is quaking in their boots (bought especially for the occasion) with excitement for this years SXSW in Austin, Tex. We're making our initial sojourn to the festival and are so pleased to see there will be a strong Seattle contingent joining us in Austin this year.
Heads Up: Sasquatch Lineup By Day
Right on the heels of the announcement that the Mars Volta was added to the Sasquatch lineup, and right before tickets go on sale this Saturday, the three-day music festival has seen fit to delineate who will be playing on which day:
Heads Up: Sasquatch Lineup Announced
After months of wild speculation, the official 2008 Sasquatch lineup has finally been announced:
Get Out Wednesday: Sera Cahoone at the Tractor
Boy, we really like Sera Cahoone. We're sitting here trying to think about what we could say that would motivate you to get out to the Tractor tomorrow to check her out, but really there are few words. She's a little bit country, a little bit folk, a little bit rock and roll. She looks a little bit like our friend Elaine, her band is hella tight, her songs will stick to your sides. She used to be a drummer, but now she just rocks our world. We're going to end band practice early tomorrow and truck it all the way to Ballard for this show. Here's why:
Why Wait Another Century? Throw a Market Party Every Year!
This past Friday, Steinbrueck Park was the site of a free, four-hour concert that punctuated Pike Place Market’s Centennial Celebration. It was a great time to be a proud, passionate Seattleite. A wonderful time to be a frugal tourist. And, despite a tiny bit of Pearl Jam-overpromising by Party promoters, a perfect time to be Seattlest.
Bumbershoot Monday: Thank God It's Over!
Don't get Seattlest wrong; we had a great time all weekend at Bumbershoot. How could we not love the mountains of garlic fries bigger than our heads? The sweaty, pimply teenage boys with their curly shagged hairdos and their overly made-up girlfriends in message t-shirts? Most importantly, and less sarcastically, how could we not get super psyched about a weekend of rainless weather in Seattle and an opportunity to discover loads of local talent about which we had previously been unaware? We couldn't! That's why we spent the whole damned weekend putting up with the sweaty, stale beer stench and the long bathroom lines. Because we heart seriously good music.
Bumpershoots Adds Some Local Flavour
Bumbershoot sent out an email this morning announcing a bunch of acts for this year's Smaller, Better Festival. There's even more hiphop on the bill with the addition of local act Blue Scholars and Common Market and Brit chick Lady Sovereign (who we're looking forward to seeing with The Streets soon). Area indie rockers Crystal Skulls and Rocky Votolato will be there and to continue the trend of one Brit band for every couple of local acts Badly Drawn Boy is now scheduled.
