We're pretty lucky here in Seattle that our main industries are pretty clean from an environmental standpoint. We've been shipping all of those dirty industries out of cities since the seventies and have been doing so at hyperspeed now that we've recognized our urban areas as holding pens for the creative class. There just aren't a lot of harmful byproducts invloved in computer software manufacturing - Maybe an overabundance of NorWestNerdCons, but that's about it. Every economy's gotta grow, though, right? Alaskan Wildlife Refuge Saved For Billionth Time

The Senate was asked to support the troops this morning via a defence spending bill that included money for soldiers in Iraq, Katrina aid and, of course, drilling for oil in the Alaskan wildlife refuge. Attaching ANWR drilling to a defence spending bill that must get passed was the brainchild of Senator Stevens of Alaska who has been trying to dig up the refuge for twenty years, a move that Senator John McCain called, "disgraceful" and "disgusting." This is probably his most fail-safe attempt to date and it failed. Screw you, Stevens. more ›

BP Doesn't Care About Our Sound

When we talked about increased tanker traffic in the Puget Sound recently we pinned it squarely on that Stevens asshole up in Alaska, and we weren't wrong in that. We completely failed to acknowledge that the English oil company BP was pulling the strings for Senator Stevens, though. We're supposed to believe that BP doesn't stand for British Petroleum anymore - Now it's Beyond Petroleum. Whatever they're called they've greenwashed their website in shiney new colors (all done with Earth-friendly dyes no doubt) and we hear a lot about them and alternative energy technologies, but according to an article in The Independent today they're having a spot of trouble with walking the walk. more ›
