Your Seattle Storm clinched a spot in next month's WNBA playoffs with a home win over Connecticut last night. If the playoffs started today, the Storm would be the Western Conference's #2-seed and face their longtime nemeses, the Los Angeles Sparks. The Storm have six regular season games left, including a home game Saturday vs. Atlanta. Tickets!

Indiana 73, Storm 66

How do you lose a game when you shoot 49%? You turn the ball over 20 times. Playing three games in four days, plus a long flight to Indianapolis = icky hoops. Note: Former Storm Yolanda Griffith, now with Indiana, suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury in the first half. Box score. Next game Fri. @ Minnesota.

Sweet, sweet Magnolia. It seems we hardly knew ye. You were the origin of Magnolia Audio Video, whose stores now will live mostly inside Best Buy, after they close seven Magnolia stores. When we think Magnolia, we think Tom Cruise movie or Discovery Park, but thanks to the Magnolia Voice we will start thinking of the Seattle Storm, who are leasing at 12,000 square foot space in Interbay, not far from the forthcoming, right-sized Whole Foods. Now we know where to go if we want to spot Lauren Jackson picking up lunch. Magnolia, you lovely flower, my how you've bloomed!

After the loss of Lauren Jackson to ankle surgery a few weeks ago, the Storm powered their way into the playoffs with strong defense, good rebounding and an uptick in backcourt scoring. Last night, in their 71-64 season-ending loss to the L.A. Sparks, the Storm failed on all three.

We were thrilled to see Mad Men get some hardware at the Emmys last night, since it is a fave at the Seattlest crib. In one of the more stunning scenes this season, Don Draper has a confrontation with his blackmailing adultress, where, with a smile, he seductively slides his hand up her dress, then grabs her by her girly-bits (yeah, those girly-bits), and curtly tells her to cut the shit, all the while flashing that dreamboat smile. Powerful, very un-PC, and certainly unexpected.

The Storm dropped Game 1 of the best-of-three series last night 77-69 in a game that was not as close as the score would seem to indicate. The Storm trailed the LA Sparks the entire game, and were behind by 17 points at the half. Sue Bird had a playoff-best 23 points in the loss. The team returns to action at Key Arena Sunday, where the Storm were 16-1 during the regular season.

Since our teams remain winless this season, Seattlest has decided to do the only logical thing to get us out of this funk...Eat! During Sunday home games, over 67,000 people flood into Qwest Field, and many of those fans stop for lunch along the way. Seattlest gets tired of bar food and $8 stadium dogs, so we asked the guys at MSG150, the International District lunch blog, to help us out with some new suggestions. We sat down with MSG150 last week while they reviewed a new restaurant in the ID.

This Seattlest has never been the world's biggest sports fan, as we've mentioned before. But Storm guard Sue Bird has made us care about women's basketball this season.

Little Fans

We try to stay positive. We really do. But with our local football teams winless this season, Blayne getting bounced off Project Runway and a certifiable jackass poised to head for the White House (again), we've been dealing with a little self-doubt this week. And listening to lots of Pink Floyd.

Sue Bird is on a mission. With WNBA MVP Lauren Jackson nursing a bad ankle, Bird scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Seattle Storm to a 70-62 win over the Chicago Sky. The win seals a playoff spot for the fifth year in a row.

The Seattle Storm downed host Atlanta Dream Tuesday night 83-69 behind Sue Bird's 21 points and 9 assists. Camille Little and Yolanda Griffith each added 16 points in a win which moved the Storm into a first-place tie with San Antonio for the best record in the Western Conference at 19-10. The Storm resume their road trip in Chicago on Thursday night.

The Seahawks dispatched with the Oakland Raiders 23-16 in the final preseason game. In recent years, preseason games have become little more than an exercise in injury avoidance, and the Hawks emerged relatively unscathed, although the receiving corps has taken a hit with losses of Engram and Obomanu for extended periods. The Hawks were 3-1 in preseason action andwill begin regular season play on Sunday as they visit the Buffalo Bills.

The Seattle Storm had good news on and off the court last night. At Key Arena, the Storm downed the Houston Comets 66-49, behind Sue Bird's 22 points, who before the game promised to pick up her offensive play with the loss of Lauren Jackson. Earlier in the day, Jackson had successful ankle surgery and walked out of the hospital. Team officials hope she might be ready for the second round of the WNBA playoffs. (However, those Aussies sure have a strange way of breaking good news.)

The Seattle Storm return to Key Arena tonight at 7:00 p.m. as the WNBA regular season draws to a close after pausing for the Beijing Olympics. At 17-9, the Storm are a half game in back of San Antonio for the Western Conference lead going into the final three weeks of play. The team faces a severe challenge, as star forward Lauren Jackson will miss the remainder of the season with an ankle injury. Jackson was the team's leading scorer, averaging just over 20 points per game.

Storm forward Lauren Jackson has opted for surgery on her right ankle immediately after she finishes play in the Olympics, effectively ending her season with the WNBA franchise. The Storm are 17-9 heading into the final weeks of play in the 2008 season. League play was halted due to the Olympics. Jackson will be out 4-6 weeks and has an outside chance of returning for the playoffs.

Soccer Comes to Seattle: Seattlest was lucky enough, to catch the international friendly between Brazil and Canada at Qwest Field Saturday evening. Seeing an explosive game between well-matched teams, from some truly great seats, got us even more excited for the inaugural season of the Seattle Sounders FC. We hope the Sounders inspire a dedicated drum section like the Brazil team brought along. We don't know if we've ever been to a more exciting professional sports game. And they said soccer in the U.S. would never succeed...

TEENY BOPPER EXPRESS: Disney's High School Musical opens at the Paramount tonight, so maybe steer clear of the teenagers downtown. If you have your own teenager, maybe it's a good night to set them free with their friends so they can go sing along and goo-goo-ga-ga over the cute boys and dreaminess of this sensational teenfest.

Great news for Seattle Storm fans broke last night: Sonics owner Clay Bennett will sell the WNBA team to a local ownership group.

In researching Seattle elementary schools, we came across Mark Bergin's article in the most recent issue of the Christian weekly World Magazine. Bergin, who covered the Seattle Storm's season for the PI, tells us about Seattle's sex-segregated Thurgood Marshall elementary school.

Here in Seattle, it's a slow sports day. The only major local team in action is the Husky women's basketball team, who host Michigan tonight. It's high school basketball night, but there aren't any particularly compelling matchups.

Not to go all Clifford Geertz on you people, but the way a culture plays sports is often a reflection of the culture itself.

There is no doubt that the Seattle Storm's Lauren Jackson is among the top five female basketball players of all-time. This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am going to relate.

Unless you count the grillers at Teddy Bear BBQ in Monroe, the Seattle Storm are the only local team with a world championship.

After downing the Cougars on Sunday, the Washington Husky Men's Basketball team, ranked 10th nationally, moved into a first-place tie with Arizona in the PAC-10. With the season halfway over, Thursday night's game in Tucson versus Arizona gets even hotter. Make sure to check them out; gametime is 5:30.
