Clay Bennett, the man who led the battle to remove the Sonics from Seattle, has been named "The 2008 Oklahoman of the Year" by Oklahoma Today magazine. Praise and tributes are pouring in on Bennett's behalf, including, we think, this touching video homage to "clay":

In what might be the biggest sports media announcement in Seattle in decades, there's a new sports-talk radio station in town!! (Cue crickets.) 710 KIRO will soon become 710 ESPN Seattle. The station recently shifted its news-talk lineup to FM sister station 97.3. We can barely believe there's demand for one all-sports station in town, and given all the pro bono PSAs we've been hearing on KJR since the election, local advertisers apparently agree. Congratulations KJR! You've been "Tully'd."
Long-time voice of the Sonics Kevin Calabro has been named play-by-play voice of Seattle Sounders FC, which begins MLS play in March 2009. Calabro called Sonics games for 21 years, and also worked NBA games nationally with TNT, TBS, NBA TV and ESPN Radio. Calabro declined to move with the Sonics when the team relocated to Oklahoma City earlier this year. Sounders FC also announced KING-5 and KONG-6/16 will telecast all Sounders FC games, except those aired nationally. We can hear it now: "BOOM-shaka-laka! DAY-VID Beckham...with a nasty cross to the RACK!"
Been sitting on the Seahawks waiting list for 4 years, and need to settle that football jones? The Seahawks are holding their annual pre-season scrimmage at Qwest Field on Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. Tickets are now on sale. Proceeds benefit local Play It Smart programs, a non-profit youth mentoring organization. Nationally, program participants are 20% more likely to graduate high school and 16% more likely to enter college.
WFAN-AM in New York is reporting that former Mariner first baseman Richie Sexson has been signed by the New York Yankees. Since Sexson cleared waivers after his release last week, the Mariners will be responsible for the majority of his Yankee salary for the remainder of the year. So not only do the Mariners overpay their own underperforming players, they are now paying for guys to sit on the Yankees' bench. Makes sense to us.
The Seattle Sounders will advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup after defeating the Kansas City Wizards 1-0 in quarterfinal play at Qwest Field Tuesday night. Play was scoreless after regulation time and 30 minutes of extra time, leading to an exciting penalty kick shoot-out, with the Sounders winning 6-5 on Zach Scott's PK conversion. The Sounders now advance to the face USL-squad Charleston Battery on Aug. 12 in a road showdown. The Battery recently defeated the Sounders 1-0 on July 5 in USL action.
