This is a pretty cool picture of Madison Park beach from 1930 that depicts a great many Seattleites summering it up. It's anti-snow medicine. Before you doubt this photo's magical anti-snow properties know that we are willing to resort to sacrifices if it comes to that. Thanks for uploading this to the Flickr Pool (back in July), Seattle Municipal Archives.

The other day, Seattlest Abbey found a gem in the Seattle Municipal Archives' photo pool. When we saw that, we knew it wasn't just a dusty old transit study from which nothing came. Our friends at HistoryLink tell us:

While perusing the wonder that is the Seattle Municipal Archives' Flickr page, we came across this and just couldn't wait to share it with you. Apparently the "Magic Carpet Study" was the name of the research and development that Metro Transit conducted in the early- to mid-'70s into an experimental downtown free ride zone. We gotta say, we would be so much more inclined to enjoy a brief trip on the "magic carpet" ride than to utilize a system with the name Joe Metro went with: the "ride free zone." Just another example of what a groovy place Seattle was in the '70s....We have the distinct feeling that today's transit studies don't have such a nifty name or cover page.

Oh, old Seattle, we can't help but love you and your straight-forward, "won't you please please like me" style. When we were a kid, Seattle was some place stuck in a far-off corner that wasn't mentioned on the national news unless Boeing had a round of lay-offs. Back then, we had to advertise and encourage people to come and move to the Emerald City with catchy slogans. Slogans like the following from 1976:

This old Sonics letterhead was appropriately posted by Seattle Municipal Archives in our Flickr Pool today. We've spent the past few weeks so angry at the Sonics ordeal and court battle, that the loss of the team and it's local history hadn't hit us until we saw this.
