There's an eyeglasses fetishist loose on Capitol Hill! Seattle 911 alerts us that a witness to Saturday night's eyeglasses theft at Neighbours says the suspect has stolen nine pairs of cheaters before. Nine coke-bottles taken does not a fetish make, so we're not sure where that part of Seattle 911's article came from, but it's a funny picture: some white, 140 lb. man with bleached hair sitting on the floor at home, surrounded by nine pairs of trendy-framed spectacles, increasingly excited by the idea that nine people are now more blind than they were before he snatched their goggles. Some therapist is gonna love that one.
A fire at the Westminster Apartments at 9th & Marion gave residents a rude awakening early Saturday morning. The P-I's Seattle 911 blog reports:
Last night's shooting of an 18-year-old man outside of the Garfield Community Center was the first news item in Seattlest Abbey's local blog round-up this morning, and we received concerned emails about it overnight. We still haven't seen any official word that this is a gang-related shooting, but it is perhaps ironic that it happened on the same day that local law enforcement announced a renewed commitment to combating street violence. Seattle 911 has an interesting video with responses to last night's crime from the community center staff and the cops, below.
Seattle 911 shows a massive response to something going down at 810 Virginia downtown. The call came at 1:13 p.m. and if we're counting right we see almost 30 units on the response, including air. "Lots of fire engines and two helicopters," says a tipster in the area. UPDATE: KOMO reports that, "Dozens of fire and medic units were sent to a building in Downtown Seattle Monday afternoon after reports of a strong smell that made some feel dizzy." "KING 5 says pepper spray," says wakingjonas in the comments...and now they're back to an "unknown substance." The building in question houses the 911 dispatch center, it turns out. UPDATE: As of 2:30 p.m., the emergency part is over. Now comes the hardest part: creating scary evening news teasers to boost ratings.
Seattle 911 asked the SPD if walking home drunk was legal (it is) and got a really good tip in return: through a service called Anna's Ride Home, thirty bars in town can offer free cab vouchers to drunken patrons in need. You just ask for a voucher, and the server fills out a slip with your address and gives it to the cab driver. Eventually, the bar and the Anna Armstrong White Foundation split your bill. Though it would be a bad idea to go out on the town planning to abuse this service to get home, Anna's Ride Home is a fantastic alternative to driving drunk. Even Vern Fonk thinks so. Thanks, SPD, for the helpful reminder as we head into the drinking holiday season!
So reports the Seattle 911 blog: "Late Monday, investigators said the blaze was deliberately set when 'combustible materials' were lit in a first-floor apartment." The resulting fire killed the building's last tenant, Ed Jackson, 89, on the day he was scheduled to move or be evicted. Commenter Jesse said yesterday the timing of this fire sounded fishy. Looks like he was right. The P-I has more details on the Capitol Hill fire here.
Ooooh—the Seattle P-I has launched their new crime blog, Seattle 911. It's a resting place for the flotsam and jetsam of the city's police and fire departments, where morbidly fascinated readers can take in side stories, breaking crime news, and details from daily reports.
